Using a crowdsourced model, the app connects users with ratings, insights and information on the accessibility features of businesses and experiences in more than 30 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are so many obstacles people with disabilities still face, and so many ways to jump in and try to solve them,\u201d said Ziv, who lives with muscular noreferrer\">Contactless Access<\/a>, first developed to help Carleton students requiring more accessibility to reach their <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/automated-access-elevators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">classes in Paterson Hall<\/a> that has now gone global.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure doors and even buses equipped with their Bluetooth modules all from their phones, a feature that has acquired more usefulness amid the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph Weber, manager of accessibility solutions for the well-known <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bemyeyes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Be My Eyes<\/a> app, which connects blind and low-vision people with sighted volunteers for visual assistance through live video calls, highlighted the importance of building relationships with users above all else.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe trust and usability of the people using the service has to come before what at Universidade Cat\u00f3lica Portuguesa researches how robotics and assistive technologies can act as tools to support play in children with neuromotor challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlay is instrumental to child development,\u201d said Encarna\u00e7\u00e3o, highlighting how play deprivation is associated with increased anxiety and even feelings of learned helplessness.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe beauty of robots, he said, is they can attract attention, maintain engagement, and adapt to children\u2019s needs to achieve that necessary balance between boredom and frustration where play occurs. \u201cWith robotics, toys can come to target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Industrial Design<\/a> Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/id\/profile\/lois-frankel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lois Frankel<\/a> unpacked her research into the value of observing and engaging with a person experiencing an accessibility issue before attempting to solve the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When one of Frankel\u2019s former students, Alicia Stewart, set out to <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/carleton-designers-win-idea-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">design a comprehensive art kit<\/a> for people with cognitive disabilities, she started by attending art classes at Ottawa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/beingstudio.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BEING Studio<\/a>, where she noticed that supplies found in the average art kit could pose challenges for people with cognitive disabilities, leading to damaged or wasted material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full wp-image-76919\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" against damage and a set of reusable paint mixing cards, integrated into a comprehensive art kit specially designed to transcend barriers to creating art faced by people with cognitive disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>University of Toronto Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mie.utoronto.ca\/faculty_staff\/nejat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Goldie Nejat\u2019s<\/a> research centres on developing socially assistive robots\u2014robots that can both look and act human\u2014to help promote independence and independent living in seniors, especially those who might be experiencing cognitive disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe idea is that these robots can help maintain a person\u2019s cognitive functioning and improve their overall quality of life,\u201d said Nejat, by helping seniors navigate meal preparation, eating, clothing selection, self-care and hygiene.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full wp-image-76918\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" href=\"https:\/\/samueli.ucla.edu\/people\/jun-chen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jun Chen<\/a> closed out the first day of the conference with a presentation on the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/glove-translates-sign-language-to-speech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wearable glove<\/a> he developed that can translate American Sign Language into spoken English for people with hearing-related disabilities. Using sensors and a circuit board integrated into the glove, the device can transmit signing to a mobile app, where ASL is translated into English speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference is a reflection of Carleton\u2019s commitment to prioritizing a culture of accessibility on campus and elevating accessibility research.
