href=\"https:\/\/architecture.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Architecture<\/a> at Carleton University, he wasn\u2019t aware of the historical significance of the buildings on Parliament Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He planned to get a degree, find a job somewhere in Canada and start designing houses and skyscrapers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image href=\"https:\/\/architecture.carleton.ca\/academic-programs\/bachelor-of-architectural-studies-bas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bachelor of Architectural Studies<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/graduate.carleton.ca\/cu-programs\/architecture-masters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Master of Architecture<\/a> from Carleton, and thanks to the skills he gained while part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cims.carleton.ca\/#\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carleton Immersive Media Studio<\/a> (CIMS), he\u2019s spent the past three years working on the team that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca\/citeparlementaire-parliamentaryprecinct\/rehabilitation\/edificeducentre-centreblock\/index-eng.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">renovating Centre Block<\/a>\u2014the first comprehensive renewal and modernization since it was built more than 100 years ago and the largest and most complex heritage rehabilitation project ever undertaken in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was in awe,\u201d Duke says about the first time he toured Centre Block as a student. \u201cThe amount of intricate, ornamental detail is amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cNot being from this country,\u201d he adds, \u201cit\u2019s been really incredible to have an opportunity to get involved in something so important.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Duke, an intern architect with <a href=\"https:\/\/architecture49.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Architecture49<\/a>, is assisting with the restoration of Centre Block\u2019s structural and aesthetic features and the design of a new welcome centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of his work involves a <a href=\"https:\/\/cims.carleton.ca\/#\/projects\/CentreBlock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Building Information Model (BIM) of Centre Block<\/a>\u2014an extremely accurate 3D digital representation tied to a database of non-graphical information that allows architects, engineers and other construction professionals to share details, helping them not only document heritage elements but also anticipate and solve renovation challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure Azrieli School of Architecture &amp; Urbanism that\u2019s playing a key role in the Parliament Hill work and is a global leader in the use of new and emerging digital technologies for architectural rehabilitation and heritage conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCIMS has a studio-like environment,\u201d says Duke, one of nearly 100 graduate and undergraduate students who have contributed to the lab\u2019s work on Parliament Hill and one of eight to begin working after graduation for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsp.com\/en-CA\/projects\/centre-block-rehabilitation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CENTRUS<\/a>, a joint venture between the HOK and WSP companies leading the renovations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe setup at CIMS before the pandemic was that everybody sits near other people and helps each other. But that\u2019s something CIMS is very experienced at doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The lab has essentially created a perfect \u201cstamp in time\u201d of Centre Block\u2014stonework, shelves, sculptures, everything\u2014which CENTRUS is using when determining which elements to fix and which to replace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BIMs are like a common language for the wide array of professionals who work on projects of this magnitude, says Romaniuk, who is now passing on the knowledge she has learned at CIMS to incoming students.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThese digital workflows and techniques are among the main skills I picked up and I\u2019m confident that they\u2019ll continue to help me in my career,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a research lab, we\u2019re not always limited by deadlines or resources.
