Born in Eritrea and raised in Uganda, she saw struggling communities firsthand. By harnessing the power of education, she achieved her mission of giving back by creating the <a href=\"http:\/\/ssiconline.ca\/?fbclid=IwAR2ztDJPGtOC7yKmFDIx2rXuFgYJ-tfuWcGoDAx5_9N0OOAW405i8c-4Y80\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sprott Social Impact Club<\/a> (SSIC) at Carleton.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI knew I wanted to do something to help,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>She first joined Carleton\u2019s chapter of the Association for the International Exchange of Students in Economics and Commerce, a global platform for young people to develop their leadership potential through international internships and volunteer opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-77332\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/feruz-dglel-800w-1.jpg\" alt=\"Feruz Dglel Tesfay\" class=\"wp-image-77332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/feruz-dglel-800w-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/feruz-dglel-800w-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/feruz-dglel-800w-1-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/feruz-dglel-800w-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/feruz-dglel-800w-1-700x394.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/feruz-dglel-800w-1-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Feruz Dglel Tesfay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With support and guidance from Sprott leaders, she established the SSCI in 2019, a youth-run student club that aims to elevate communities facing difficulties by providing access to educational institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SSIC provides&nbsp;Carleton students with a platform to run projects that address social issues such as poverty, lack of access to education and child marriages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe idea was to be a platform for students to run projects to address issues that they&#8217;re passionate about,\u201d says Dglel Tesfay.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOn one hand you\u2019re making a difference. On the other hand, you don\u2019t have to be an executive to get practical leadership experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Anyone can run a project through the SSIC. Students bring ideas and work with club members to reach fundraising goals. It\u2019s definitely heartwarming.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Getting involved on campus not only boosted her resume, but provided her with invaluable connections and networking opportunities that will help her with her career, she says.
