autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From September 1 to 5, students will be <a href=\"https:\/\/housing.carleton.ca\/future-residents\/moving-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">moving into residence<\/a>, and classes begin on September 8. In-person classes are capped at 60 students and will rely on masks and physical distancing for additional safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many universities throughout Ontario, Carleton has implemented <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/2021\/update-mandatory-vaccination-in-person-activities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vaccination requirements<\/a> for all members of the campus community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In light of the highly transmissible Delta variant and evolving public health advice, all individuals coming to campus&nbsp;must attest to receiving their first vaccine dose by September 8 and their second no later than October 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton\u2019s Health and Counselling Services is offering&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/lists.carleton.ca\/t\/450998\/435243\/13039\/3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vaccination clinics<\/a>&nbsp;until October 7 and drop-in vaccinations are also available at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/lists.carleton.ca\/t\/450998\/435243\/12774\/4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">clinics throughout Ottawa<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After using the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/covid19\/cuscreen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cuScreen<\/a> self-assessment tool, anyone coming to campus will see signage that designates building entrances and exits, directional flow and physical distancing markers. An ambassador program will further encourage people to follow public health guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-78757\"><img loading=\"lazy\" all buildings have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/covid19\/safe-return-to-campus\/building-preparation\/#sect3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">updated ventilation systems<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/covid19\/safe-return-to-campus\/building-preparation\/#sect4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rigorous water testing protocols<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/covid19\/safe-return-to-campus\/building-preparation\/#sect2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hand sanitizing stations<\/a>&nbsp;and new&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/lists.carleton.ca\/t\/440605\/436752\/13043\/8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cleaning protocols<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI am hopeful that once we get over the understandable hesitation of returning to campus after more than a year away, we will again come to fully enjoy the pleasures of seeing each other in person and of feeling the wonderful energy of the fall id=\"innovation-in-the-new-nicol-building\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Innovation in the New Nicol Building<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the pandemic, one of the best signs that Carleton\u2019s growth and progress remain on track is the opening of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/the-nicol-building\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nicol Building<\/a>, the new home of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sprott School of Business<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty and staff have moved into their offices and classes will be held inside the building, which is also the base for the university\u2019s new cross-faculty <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/innovation-hub-creative-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Innovation Hub<\/a> and a Bridgehead Coffee outlet.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe hub will provide a platform for Carleton students to work together and co-create innovative, multidisciplinary solutions to wicked challenges and make a positive impact in the world,\u201d says Sprott <a been embedded into every facet of the Nicol Building, which is expected to achieve 4.5\/5&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thegbi.org\/green-globes-certification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green Globes<\/a>, a nationally-recognized environmental building certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among other features, the design significantly reduced the amount of concrete required by using BubbleDeck technology, the heating system uses steam and hot water instead of forced-air, and the ventilation system has been outfitted with heat and energy recovery wheels, which take heat and moisture from the exhaust air and supply it to the cold fresh air coming in, resulting in a significant reduction in energy consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCarleton pays a lot of attention to energy consumption,\u201d says Doron Meinhard from the building\u2019s design firm,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hariripontarini.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hariri Pontarini programming at Carleton this fall includes the launch of a <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/climatechange\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collaborative specialization in climate change<\/a>, which students from <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/climatechange\/participating-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than a dozen programs<\/a> can add to their degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This unique collaboration draws on the university\u2019s demonstrated strengths and its internationally recognized climate change researchers across all faculties, creating a diverse specialization that will allow students to examine and respond to the interconnected nature of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/science.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Faculty of Science<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Faculty of Public Affairs<\/a> (FPA) are also collaborating this fall on a new jointly-delivered <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ieis\/certificate-in-science-and-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Certificate in Science and Policy<\/a>, which is designed to provide students with foundational knowledge about the science-policy interface and practical href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/economics\/graduate-studies\/the-graduate-diploma-gdip-in-economic-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graduate Diploma in Economic Policy<\/a>. The part-time program is designed to expose anyone with an undergraduate degree and at least some formal training in undergraduate economics to a wide range of issues related to the formulation of economic policy.
