Concerned about disappointing her parents, who had spent a lot of money on her training, she was suicidal. Then she began talking about her struggles\u2014something athletes did <em>not<\/em> do in the 1980s\u2014and the rest is history.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMental illness has been brushed under the carpet for so long, but you can only get help and become more healthy when things are out in the open,\u201d says Manley, who learned how to manage her anxiety and depression through therapy and with support from her family.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>She returned to figure skating, competed in the 1984 Olympics and again at the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, where her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hV179v0zjkM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stunning performance<\/a> in the long program catapulted her onto the podium as a silver medallist and into the national spotlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/liz-manley-225w-1b.jpg\" alt=\"Liz Manley at the Olympics\" class=\"wp-image-79189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/liz-manley-225w-1b.jpg 225w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/liz-manley-225w-1b-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/liz-manley-225w-1b-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNobody wanted to put \u2018Canada\u2019s Sweetheart\u2019 and mental health in the same sentence,\u201d says Manley, who will be the Lived Experience speaker at Carleton\u2019s online <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/psychology-mental-health-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psychology Mental Health Day<\/a> on Oct. 7 (registration, open to all, closes on Oct. 5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m from an era when it was \u2018Suck it up, buttercup\u2019 and \u2018Take your tears to the parking lot.\u2019 I kept everything inside and my body couldn\u2019t take it anymore. Manley\u2019s story embodies the importance of speaking up and seeking help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud of people like Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka,\u201d says Manley, who won the Royal Ottawa Foundation\u2019s Transformational Leader award at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.obj.ca\/social-royal-ottawa-foundations-inspiration-awards-honour-liz-manley-and-fellow-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2020 Inspiration Awards<\/a>, the same prize that President Bacon <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/transformational-leader-award-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">received a year later<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe need to show that it\u2019s OK to take care of yourself, that it\u2019s OK to walk away and take the time you need to work things out, to let the world stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to know what the signs of mental illness are, says Manley, and to not be afraid of admitting you have a problem and need help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try to stop worrying about things you have no control over, she advises. Be mindful and find and follow your passions. Love yourself and love what you\u2019re doing.
