While exploring this topic, Linton was trying to figure out where in Ontario people with disabilities were living and quickly realized the task was more complex than it should have been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI learned that there was this massive data gap around where people with intellectual and development disabilities were living in Ontario,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThen as the pandemic started, this data transformed from being something I needed for my research into a critical issue for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Data showed that people with disabilities are six times more likely to contract and die from COVID-19, says Linton, so her work shifted to focus on figuring out how to prioritize access to vaccines and support for this population<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Struck by the lack of research into COVID-19 cases and outbreaks at institutions where people with disabilities lived, Linton took the initiative to become the expert herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re going to vaccinate all of the retirement homes and long-term care facilities,\u201d she says, \u201cwe need to include other types of institutions where people are at a higher risk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-70823 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/grant-long-term-care-homes-1200w-2.jpg\" alt=\"Carleton and Bruy\u00e8re Researchers Receive Grant to help Long-Term Care Homes Protect Themselves from COVID\" class=\"wp-image-70823\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/grant-long-term-care-homes-1200w-2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/grant-long-term-care-homes-1200w-2-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/grant-long-term-care-homes-1200w-2-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/grant-long-term-care-homes-1200w-2-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/grant-long-term-care-homes-1200w-2-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/grant-long-term-care-homes-1200w-2-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"john-davis-burtons-legacy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">John Davis Burton\u2019s Legacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dr. John Davis Burton Award was created in the memory of John Davis Burton, a champion and advocate for people with disabilities. He made significant contributions toward awareness, equity and integration throughout his career as an educator and coordinator of educational support services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full wp-image-79266\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/john-burton-225w-1.jpg\" alt=\"John Davis Burton\" class=\"wp-image-79266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/john-burton-225w-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/john-burton-225w-1-200x267.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">John Davis Burton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Burton was an employee of the Paul Menton Centre when it first opened in January 1990 and worked there until dying of cancer in 1992 at the age of 40. After his death, an initial contribution by the Carleton University Students&#8217; Association (CUSA) led to the creation of the award, which is given annually to a deserving student who is enrolled at Algonquin College, Carleton, La Cit\u00e9 Coll\u00e8giale or the University of Ottawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The award was endowed in 1992 and has been supported by contributions from Burton\u2019s family and friends ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a really hard year and it felt so special to feel seen and recognized for the work I\u2019ve been doing,\u201d says Linton.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI am super grateful, and it gave me an opportunity to reflect on what we have been able to accomplish this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear that Megan certainly manifests those wonderful qualities that the Burton award has come to represent: advocacy and trying to make a difference in terms of accessibility,\u201d says Faith Silver, wife of the late Burton. \u201cShe is a very impressive individual.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"striving-towards-inclusivity\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Striving Towards Inclusivity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking forward, Linton is excited about continuing her disability research and activism during her PhD program in<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/socanth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Sociology<\/a>, focusing on the political economy of the developmental services in Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"75\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/invisible-institutions-225w-1.jpg\" alt=\"Invisible Institutions Logo\" class=\"wp-image-79269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/invisible-institutions-225w-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/invisible-institutions-225w-1-200x67.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s also launching a podcast called <em><a href=\"http:\/\/invisibleinstitutions.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Invisible Institutions<\/a><\/em>, which will examine the history and ongoing use of institutions in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a great way for people to learn and I\u2019m so excited to share it with people in as many forums as possible,\u201d she says, adding that freedom and justice for people with disabilities is the driving force that inspires her to keep going.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel very committed to making sure that the world is a place where my friends can live and have autonomy in their choices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/our-stories\/\">More Stories<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At a time when many people felt like their lives had come to a halt, Megan Linton was the busiest she had ever been.
