As modern humans push beyond the bounds of Earth itself, we follow in their footsteps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHumans are explorers, driven by a sense of curiosity and adventure,\u201d says Andrew Rader. \u201cWe always have been.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A graduate of Carleton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/engineering-design\/future-students\/undergraduate-programs\/aerospace-engineering\/\">Bachelor of Engineering in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering<\/a> program, Rader is now a mission manager for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/\">SpaceX<\/a>, a California-based space manufacturing and transportation company that launches missions for commercial clients and government agencies such as NASA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-79310\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/andrew-rader-1200w-1.jpg\" alt=\"SpaceX Mission Manager Andrew Rader\" class=\"wp-image-79310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/andrew-rader-1200w-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/andrew-rader-1200w-1-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/andrew-rader-1200w-1-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/andrew-rader-1200w-1-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/andrew-rader-1200w-1-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/andrew-rader-1200w-1-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Andrew Rader<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat drive explains a lot of humanity&#8217;s technological progress,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cTimes of great technological advancement correspond with exploration\u2014and have been driven by it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Rader dove deep into humanity\u2019s penchant for exploration in his 2019 non-fiction book <em>Beyond the Known: How Exploration Created the Modern World and Will Take Us to the Stars<\/em> But when he began his studies, he wasn\u2019t thinking in sweeping, meta-historical terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI chose to study aerospace engineering partly because I really love airplanes and flying, and, honestly, partly because my mother worked for Air Canada,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut I had a good friend who studied space systems. It kind of rubbed off on me, and I gravitated toward the field. I began thinking of the critical path, and knew the hardware really needed to be ready. SpaceX was the only company that had declared intent and was making progress. He manages the vehicle side of missions that take satellites to orbit and launch interplanetary science missions throughout the solar system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He draws on experience in aerial systems that began at Carleton, when he developed an un-crewed aerial vehicle as a capstone project. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/polisci\/\">Political Science<\/a> at Carleton and now works as a strategic communications and public affairs specialist at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers\/johnson\/home\/index.html\">Johnson Space Center<\/a> in Houston. But as a student, a career in the space sector wasn\u2019t even on her radar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full wp-image-79317\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/nilufar-ramji-225w-1.jpg\" alt=\"Nilufar Ramji\" class=\"wp-image-79317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/nilufar-ramji-225w-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/nilufar-ramji-225w-1-200x267.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Nilufar Ramji<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought I\u2019d go to law school or do a Master of Public Administration. I never thought I\u2019d work at NASA,\u201d says Ramji.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramji did a few work placements through the Federal Student Work Experience program, and after graduating, was hired by Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC), an international development organization with Canadian headquarters in Ottawa. AKFC\u2019s programming tackles the root causes of poverty and inequality\u2014and Ramji thought she\u2019d be contributing to this side of its work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But she ended up joining their public affairs team and working to inform Canadians about the importance of getting involved in international development. It was there that she started developing the skill set she now uses at NASA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe shared the story of how Canadians are impacting international development. What we get back, and how we can be good neighbours,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThat was pivotal for me. I really enjoyed thinking outside the box and being creative. It took my career in a different direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Ramji moved to Houston for a different position, but after a few years, she was offered a job as a contractor at NASA. A large portion of the space agency\u2019s workers are contractors, and Ramji initially worked for a company that supports NASA\u2019s communications, outreach and multimedia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNASA is an agency that literally takes you out of this world, it has helped me achieve my career aspirations. I can\u2019t wait to see what the future holds,\u201d says Ramji, who became a permanent employee earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEveryone is excited to be there. One of the best parts of working on such a large team is the opportunity to learn so many different things\u2014mission commentary, video production, writing, strategic planning and integration.
