desperately trying to board the final few flights out of the city, Carleton student Maryam Sahar delivered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/canada\/blood-on-your-hands-afghan-interpreter-warns-trudeau-if-family-is-executed-1.5554360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a strong message to Canada\u2019s federal government<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sahar, an <a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/undergrad\/undergradprograms\/politicalscience\/#Concentration_in_International_Relations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Relations<\/a> graduate who was about to start her master\u2019s in <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Migration and Diaspora Studies<\/a>, had been the first and only female interpreter to work with the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-element-caption\">Maryam Sahar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Already a women\u2019s rights activist, she began translating for the military as a 15-year-old graduate of a Canadian-funded high school in 2009, putting herself and her family in jeopardy. But the risk was worth it: she was helping westerners understand the challenges faced by Afghan women and develop educational, health and legal programs to support them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sahar went on to work for the U.S. Department of State and several international aid agencies. Then one of her brothers was kidnapped and tortured by the Taliban\u2014a warning\u2014so she escaped to Canada in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This past summer, as another wave of Afghan interpreters and others who had collaborated with foreign governments were leaving the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/news\/world\/the-last-trip-out-of-afghanistan-there-is-no-way-back-taliban-are-outside\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sahar\u2019s mother and two of her brothers attempted to join the exodus<\/a>. In 2013, <a href=\"https:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/ottawa%20&amp;%20area\/we-were-like-animals-living-in-a-cage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an <em>Ottawa Citizen<\/em> article<\/a> shared Sahar\u2019s story\u2014and her goal of continuing her education\u2014and caught the eye of Carleton alumnus David Brook. He and other strangers raised thousands of dollars to help her enrol at Carleton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full wp-image-79960\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/james-milner-225w-1.jpg\" alt=\"Prof. James Milner\" class=\"wp-image-79960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/james-milner-225w-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/james-milner-225w-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/james-milner-225w-1-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Prof. James Milner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Sahar struggled with depression and PTSD, compassionate professors and support from <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health and Counselling Services<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/pmc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities<\/a> helped her finished her degree in six and a half years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of those professors, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/polisci\/people\/milner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Milner<\/a>, the director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/lerrn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Local Engagement Refugee Research Network (LERRN)<\/a>, which is committed to promoting protection and solutions with and for refugees, agreed to be her master\u2019s supervisor.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMaryam\u2019s journey is a testament to the exceptional contributions that displaced persons can make,\u201d says Milner, \u201cand also a clear illustration of the critical role that Carleton can play in providing support that responds to the needs and experiences of refugees.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-79964 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/laptop-canada-1200w-1.jpg\" alt=\"Flag of Canada on laptop\" class=\"wp-image-79964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/laptop-canada-1200w-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/laptop-canada-1200w-1-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/laptop-canada-1200w-1-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/laptop-canada-1200w-1-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/laptop-canada-1200w-1-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/laptop-canada-1200w-1-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"ensuring-others-dont-face-the-same-challenges\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ensuring Others Don\u2019t Face the Same Challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, Sahar wanted to do a research project on internally-displaced people in Afghanistan, but first COVID and then the Taliban\u2019s resurgence prevented her from returning to her homeland to conduct fieldwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/maryam-sahar-225w-1.jpg\" alt=\"Maryam Sahar\" class=\"wp-image-79958\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/maryam-sahar-225w-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/maryam-sahar-225w-1-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now she\u2019s focused on her classes and is thinking about a PhD or law school. Ultimately, she wants to work to improve the government so that others don\u2019t face the same challenges her family did when they needed Canadian visas. She\u2019s also interested in the possibility of running for office one day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCanada is an amazing country with wonderful people,\u201d says Sahar, \u201cbut the immigration system is broken. The evacuation from Afghanistan showed how much needs to change. The crisis was preventable, but we let the same mistakes happen again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAs a politician, I could help address the issues faced by immigrants and refugees. That\u2019s what motivates me. There may not be other places exactly like Afghanistan, but there will be other refugee and humanitarian crises around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>For now, Sahar has become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-for-afghan-interpreters-in-canada-reunited-with-soldiers-they-helped\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a go-to source for Canadian media<\/a> covering Afghanistan, and she brings her personal experiences to the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTheory and real life are often not the same,\u201d she says, \u201cso I participate in class discussions and try to challenge academic thinking.
