Today, the event known as the Montr\u00e9al Massacre is commemorated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/women-gender-equality.canada.ca\/en\/commemorations-celebrations\/16-days\/national-day-remembrance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton University and its <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/engineering-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Faculty of Engineering and Design<\/a> will honour the memory of the women who were killed with a commemorative video and will take a stand against gender-based violence by calling on the community to take an allyship pledge.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Carleton Honours Canada&#039;s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women (2021)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gqJqLx6ixDE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis day recognizes the destructive, far-reaching impacts of gender-based violence in our society and aims to spread awareness and support for victims of gender-based violence everywhere,\u201d says Onita Basu, professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhile much progress has been made since this tragedy took place, there is still much to be done as a nation, as a community and as individuals to advance women\u2019s equality and promote diversity and inclusion across all fields.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Basu underscores our collective ability to promote change and create healthy learning environments for women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-80064\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"903\" height=\"645\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Onita-Basu_edited.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Onita Basu\" class=\"wp-image-80064\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Onita-Basu_edited.jpg 903w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Onita-Basu_edited-400x286.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Onita-Basu_edited-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Onita-Basu_edited-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Onita-Basu_edited-700x500.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Onita-Basu_edited-200x143.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 903px) 100vw, 903px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Onita Basu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, systemic discrimination against women within engineering saw them discouraged from pursuing an education in science or mathematics and prevented them from accessing equal opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help address this, Basu notes, the Faculty of Engineering has committed to developing initiatives to support women in engineering and information technology (IT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One such measure is the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/engineering-design\/about\/womeninengineering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women in Engineering and IT (WiE&amp;IT) Program<\/a>, supported by 16 industry and government partners, which aims to help close the gender gap in in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields by providing women students with access to networking, mentorship and soft skill development opportunities.
