Fraser Taylor, Chancellor\u2019s Distinguished Research Professor, was <a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/story\/carletons-fraser-taylor-named-to-the-order-of-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">named an officer of the Order of Canada<\/a> <em>\u201cfor his innovative contributions to cartography, and for spearheading the theoretical and practical development of cybercartography.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognized internationally as a leading figure in the field of cartography, Taylor is the Chancellor\u2019s Distinguished Research Professor of&nbsp;International Affairs,&nbsp;Geography and Environmental Studies&nbsp;and the Director of the&nbsp;Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre&nbsp;at Carleton. He is a recipient of many awards, notably the Killam Prize for the Social Sciences\u2014Canada\u2019s highest academic honour (2014), the Carl Mannerfelt Gold Award\u2014the International Cartographic Association\u2019s most prestigious acknowledgement and first presentation to a Canadian (2013), and the 3M\/Royal Canadian Geographic Society Award for Environmental Innovation (2012).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Honourable Murray Sinclair, Honorary Doctorate recipient (2015), was named a companion of the Order of Canada <em>\u201cfor his commitment to the representation of Indigenous legal issues, and for his dedication to reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Honourable Justice Hugh L. Fraser, alumnus and former Ravens football athlete, was named an officer of the Order of Canada <em>\u201cfor his transformative contributions to Canadian sport as an internationally recognized expert in sports law and as a former Olympian.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tomson Highway, Honorary Doctorate recipient (2013), was named officer of the Order of Canada <em>\u201cfor his sustained and distinguished contributions to theatre and Canadian culture as one of our foremost playwrights and novelists.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, alumna (Bachelor of Arts \u201982) and Honorary Doctorate recipient (2019), was named an officer of the Order of Canada <em>\u201cfor her ongoing commitment to improving the child welfare system and supports for Indigenous people in British Columbia.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lawson A. W. Hunter, former member of the School of Public Policy and Administration Leadership Council and Kroeger Steering Committee, was named a member of the Order of Canada <em>\u201cfor his distinguished career in government, business and private practice as one of the country\u2019s leading competition and antitrust lawyers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pradeep Merchant, Chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canada-India Centre for Governing Council<\/a> and former Board of Governors member (2013\u20132019) was named a member of the Order of Canada <em>\u201cfor his long-standing contributions to his community, including his philanthropy and his leadership in the promotion of bilateral ties between Canada and India.\u201d<\/em> Merchant also serves on the Board of the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Council of Ottawa, responsible for establishing Mahatma Gandhi\u2019s statue at the entrance of Richcraft Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gov. Gen. Mary Simon announced the 135 new appointments to the Order of Canada on Dec. 29, 2021.
