De Grasse focused on spending time with his family, and on taking care of both his physical and mental health so he can continue to find success on and off the track in the months and years ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAfter winning gold, it could have been overwhelming, but I tried to keep the same lifestyle and not let it get to my head,\u201d says De Grasse, who also won a pair of bronze medals in Tokyo, setting a personal best of 9.89 seconds in the 100-metre sprint and anchoring the men\u2019s 4 x 100-metre relay team to a third-place finish.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI tried to maintain the balance between my career and my life outside sport. Being a father helps. It helps him remain mindful and present, which provides the energy and strength required to navigate busy days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve also realized over the years that I need to get a good night\u2019s sleep,\u201d adds De Grasse.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cUsually, when I can get a good eight or nine hours, my day goes a lot better. I\u2019m able to get things done and be efficient.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Underlying these strategies, as might be expected of an elite athlete, De Grasse pays close attention to what he eats and drinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen my nutrition is on point and my hydration is good,\u201d he says, \u201cI\u2019m in a better mood and am not sluggish. Four years and countless hours of training later, De Grasse won a trio of medals\u2014a silver in the 200-metre race and two bronzes\u2014at the Summer Olympics in Rio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/andredegrasse.com\/the-andre-de-grasse-family-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/andre-de-grasse-family-foundation-logo-225w-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/andre-de-grasse-family-foundation-logo-225w-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/andre-de-grasse-family-foundation-logo-225w-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/andre-de-grasse-family-foundation-logo-225w-1-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Without the bold swagger that typifies superstar sprinters such as Usain Bolt, who beat him in the 200-metre final in Rio, De Grasse maintained a methodical approach to progressing toward Olympic gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also found time to launch the <a href=\"https:\/\/andredegrasse.com\/the-andre-de-grasse-family-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andre De Grasse Family Foundation<\/a>, which inspires and empowers youth through access to sport, education and health care, and returned to the University of Southern California to finish his sociology degree.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI think everyone goes through adversity, which is why I want to share my story and share tips with kids and university students,\u201d says De Grasse.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI share the things that I try to do to get through each day, and maybe some of these tips can help others on their journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are going to be ups and downs, but if you try to finish what you\u2019ve started, to get outside your comfort zone and stay positive, that\u2019ll help you feel good about yourself and find the mental toughness you need to keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/our-stories\/\">More Stories<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Andre De Grasse won a gold medal in the 200-metre sprint at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo last year, setting a new Canadian record with a scorching 19.62 seconds, his life changed dramatically.
