Carleton awards numerous medals to honour the dedication of Ravens who have excelled in their studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 3, 2022, Carleton\u2019s Senate met to confer the degrees of the graduating class and announced this year\u2019s winners, including students recognized with the Governor General\u2019s, Chancellor\u2019s and President\u2019s medals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"governor-general-gold-medallist-explores-machine-learning-and-medical-therapies\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Governor General Gold Medallist Explores Machine Learning and Medical Therapies<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The winner of the Governor General Gold Medal Kevin Dick is graduating with his PhD in <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.carleton.ca\/programs\/biomedical-and-mechanical-engineering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biomedical Engineering<\/a>. The medal is awarded to the graduating PhD student at the head of the graduating class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full wp-image-83229\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"299\" height=\"398\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kevin-Dick-Photo.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of Kevin Dick\" class=\"wp-image-83229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Kevin-Dick-Photo.jpg 299w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Kevin-Dick-Photo-200x266.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kevin Dick, photo by Chris Roussakis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>His doctoral research aimed to apply machine learning to better understand which pairs of proteins physically interact. This information could help scientists improve the design of medical therapies. Dick has led studies related to Zika Virus, Malaria-causing parasites, allergens, and on the SARS-CoV-2 virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have always held a special fascination for life and the complexities of molecular systems,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When deciding which university to complete his PhD at, Dick was drawn to the friendly atmosphere and research strength of Carleton \u2014 where his work was supervised by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sce.carleton.ca\/faculty\/green\/green.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prof. James Green<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A highlight of his time was leading a machine learning class. It was at a pre-vaccine stage of the pandemic, and he provided students with an opportunity to create state-of-the-art methods to determine which drugs could be used to treat COVID-19. The students were able to share co-authorship on a journal publication and Dick was nominated for the Outstanding Teaching Assistant award that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dick plans to continue his work as a data scientist with an eventual goal of joining academia. A direction that eventually led her to pursuing neuroscience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt offered that human element I was looking for and sounded really interesting\u201d says Brkic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program enabled her to expand her knowledge on neural function and pathology \u2014 a relevant subject in a world where so many are experiencing mental health issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Brkic prepares to begin her Doctor of Optometry program this fall at the University of Waterloo, she encourages students who are just beginning their university journey to surround themselves with supportive friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so important to find your group of people that support you and make the mundane tasks enjoyable,\u201d she says, noting there many stressful and challenging moments during the university years. \u201cIf you have the right group of friends, those moments can end up being something you laugh about and help each other through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo me, in the good times and the bad times it was the people that made everything worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fellow Governor General silver medalist and Neuroscience student Zachary Silver had initially enrolled in Carleton\u2019s Bachelor of Health Sciences but decided to switch after speaking with friends in the neuroscience program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-83231\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Zach-Silver-Photo-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of Zachary Silver \" class=\"wp-image-83231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Zach-Silver-Photo-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Zach-Silver-Photo-400x533.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Zach-Silver-Photo-200x267.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Zach-Silver-Photo.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Zachary Silver<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe coolest part of studying the brain to me is the sheer complexity of it all,\u201d he says. \u201cAll science is complex, but I think in neuroscience there\u2019s a seemingly unlimited number of variables for you to consider. It presents a huge challenge that is really appealing to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research opportunities at Carleton were a major highlight for Silver. He worked in the lab of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/neuroscience\/profile\/alfonso-abizaid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prof. Alfonso Abizaid<\/a> for three years studying cortisol regulation and metabolism, as well as the effects of gestational diabetes on people later in life. It is awarded to graduating undergraduate students of outstanding academic achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bachelor of <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.carleton.ca\/programs\/cognitive-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cognitive Science<\/a> (Honours) graduate Justine Kennis knew she wanted to study the mind but wanted to explore it through various disciplines. When looking into post-secondary options, she heard about cognitive science at Carleton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-83232\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"401\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Justine-Kennis-1_edited-300x401.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of Justine Kennis \" class=\"wp-image-83232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Justine-Kennis-1_edited-300x401.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Justine-Kennis-1_edited-400x535.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Justine-Kennis-1_edited-200x267.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Justine-Kennis-1_edited.jpg 449w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Justine Kennis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce I found out about it, it ticked all my boxes,\u201d she says. \u201cIt is interdisciplinary at its core.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A highlight of her time at Carleton was taking part in research on how positive emotions effect risk-taking with Instructor <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cognitivescience\/people\/slobodenyuk-nadiya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nadiya Slobodenyuk<\/a>. It gave her an opportunity grow her understanding of the research process \u2014 along with working through its challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, Kennis is working as a Consultative Engagement Analyst with Statistics Canada, with an eye to potentially becoming a UX (User Experience) researcher, building on her co-ops with the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For students who may benefit from accommodations, Kennis draws on her experience and strongly recommends reaching out the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/pmc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Menton Centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUniversity can definitely be challenging, and you should not have to go through it without the right support for you,\u201d she says, noting that people may downplay their needs or think their grades don\u2019t warrant the support. \u201cWhich is a shame, since they might not be aware of what they can do with even the smallest accommodations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kennis also stresses the importance of having an open mind about future pathways in the early years of study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou won\u2019t know if something is for you until you\u2019ve tried it,\u201d says Kennis. \u201cEnjoy your classes, and then after one to two years, you can make more educated choices about what you want to do after your degree.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jayson Yung, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.carleton.ca\/programs\/psychology-ba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psychology<\/a>, has always been fascinated with the interaction between the human mind and the body. When he was determining where he wanted to attend university, he took time to speak to current and former Carleton students to get an understanding of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-83233\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jayson-Yung-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of Jayson Yung\" class=\"wp-image-83233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Jayson-Yung-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Jayson-Yung-400x533.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Jayson-Yung-200x267.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Jayson-Yung.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jayson Yung<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey mentioned there was a very welcoming environment at Carleton,\u201d says Yung. \u201cThrough these conversations, I could hear how enriching it was to learn through this program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his studies, Yung took part in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/2021-undergraduate-summer-research-interns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FASS Undergraduate Summer Research Internship project<\/a> with his supervisor <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/people\/nassim-tabri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prof. Nassim Tabri<\/a>, which allowed him to expand his research experience. Yung credits his previous work with Profs. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/people\/katie-gunnell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Katie Gunnell<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/people\/rachel-burns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rachel Burns<\/a> with providing him the academic background needed to be selected for the internship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yung\u2019s future plans include pursuing further education at St. Paul University, as he works towards becoming a psychotherapist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For current and future students, Yung notes the benefits of time management and engaging with faculty members during their studies, as well as the importance of making space in hectic schedules for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome people may be too focused on the academics and might not spend time &nbsp;to relax,\u201d says Yung. \u201cSelf-care is very important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Madeline Wadlow, who is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology, transferred to Carleton after completing her first year at Bishop\u2019s University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-83234\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Madeline-Wadlow-photo_edited-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of Madeline Wadlow \" class=\"wp-image-83234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Madeline-Wadlow-photo_edited-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Madeline-Wadlow-photo_edited-400x533.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Madeline-Wadlow-photo_edited-200x267.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Madeline-Wadlow-photo_edited.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Madeline Wadlow<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the big draws was the amount of courses offered in all the various disciplines of psychology,\u201d says Wadlow. \u201cThere were a few courses offered in environmental psychology, which is my primary area of interest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wadlow particularly enjoyed working on her thesis, which examined people\u2019s relationship to nature to see how those measures related to environmental behaviors. Her work was supervised by <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/people\/john-m-zelenski\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prof. John Zelenski<\/a>, director of the Happiness Laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a really rewarding process to conduct my own research and ask some new questions that hadn\u2019t been asked before,\u201d says Wadlow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also took part in extracurricular clubs including the Parks Canada Outdoor Club, and the Carleton Climbing Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While she looks forward to completing a master\u2019s in environmental psychology in the future, Wadlow intends to take a few years before returning to academia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wadlow\u2019s advice for students is to ensure that they take care of themselves while pursuing their post-secondary education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAim for balance,\u201d says Wadlow. \u201cJoining clubs and having that social time refuels you and lets you do your best in school.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she arrived at Carleton, Bachelor of <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.carleton.ca\/programs\/computer-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Computer Science<\/a> graduate Yangrui Zhu had already completed a business degree in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was initially worried because I was in my late 20s when I came here,\u201d she says. \u201cIt is not very common in China for someone of my age to go back to university for another undergraduate degree.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon, however, she met students from all walks of life \u2014 from a mom who would take her children to a tutorial, to a classmate who was also a retiree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is so encouraging and inspiring to study with people from all different kinds of backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there were limited opportunities during the pandemic, interacting with peers \u2014 such as discussing problems with friends and classmates on campus \u2014 were some of Zhu\u2019s favorite experiences at Carleton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zhu was offered a position in the company where she completed her co-op and is now working as a software developer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For students interested in doing well, Zhu notes a bit of preparation ahead of time can make a significant impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne thing that really helped with my studying was preparing lessons before class,\u201d she says. \u201cGo through the course materials, do the reading and try the coding examples.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bachelor of Science (Honours) graduate Erica O&#8217;Neill chose Carleton after visiting the campus following a family relocation to the capital region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-83236\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"399\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Photo-for-Medallist-Story-EONeill_edited-300x399.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of Erica O'Neill \" class=\"wp-image-83236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Photo-for-Medallist-Story-EONeill_edited-300x399.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Photo-for-Medallist-Story-EONeill_edited-400x532.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Photo-for-Medallist-Story-EONeill_edited-200x266.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Photo-for-Medallist-Story-EONeill_edited.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Erica O&#8217;Neill<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI really liked the Carleton campus,\u201d says O\u2019Neill. \u201cIt was very scenic, peaceful \u2026 I could see myself studying by the river.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Neill decided to pursue biology as it presented interesting concepts for her to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI liked learning about animals, life on earth and evolution,\u201d she says. \u201cSo much of it is a little logical puzzle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to NSERC-funded positions, during her time at Carleton O\u2019Neill was able to work on biology research projects with <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/heath-macmillan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prof. Heath MacMillan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/tom-sherratt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prof. Tom Sherratt<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBoth of them were fantastic to work with,\u201d she says, noting that professors she met during her studies were very motivated to help students get involved in research. She encourages new students to not be intimidated to engage with their professors and teaching assistants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTalk to your professors. In first year, I was still pretty scared to talk to them,\u201d she says, noting it wasn\u2019t until around her third year that her perspective started shifting. \u201cI have found at every instance that professors are really excited to talk about their work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Neill will be taking the analytical skills she acquired during her undergraduate studies to her upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/graduate.carleton.ca\/cu-programs\/mathematics-and-statistics-masters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Master of Statistics<\/a> at Carleton, focusing on combining biology and statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joyce Theresa Bacic, who is graduating with a Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) has also been recognized with the Chancellor\u2019s Medal.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure President\u2019s Medal is awarded to the student with the highest standing in a general degree program of studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This spring\u2019s winner Josh Guarnieri is graduating with a Bachelor of <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.carleton.ca\/programs\/mathematics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mathematics and Statistics<\/a>, though he had initially enrolled in astrophysics, going on to try computer science and business before discovering his enjoyment of statistics in a first-year course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-thumbnail when students were understanding or not understanding concepts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing able to return to campus and being able to experience that live, raw, more personal form of teaching and learning was very good for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given his experience finding academic success in the field of statistics, Guarnieri encourages other students to not be afraid of expanding their horizons and switching programs if they are not finding the right fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTake electives and take \u2018intro-to\u2019 classes,\u201d he says. \u201cYou might actually surprise
