And because this can happen to anybody, no matter where you are or what you do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>As part of the small team helming the Placement, Preservation and Perseverance project, which is co-led by Carleton and UBC and is supported by a $1.1-million grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idrc.ca\/en?gclid=CjwKCAjw14uVBhBEEiwAaufYx91sjZAlWQJqtDCuz43pHC9ftk0Zur2RO7BeEU0zhuNe7zJaP_qdRBoCi6oQAvD_BwE\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">International Development Research Centre<\/a> (IDRC), Karim is helping recently-displaced Afghan scholars establish a new intellectual community in Canada. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project, whose lead researcher is Carleton <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/law\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Law and Legal Studies<\/a> Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/law\/people\/melanie-adrian\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Melanie Adrian<\/a>, the founder of SAR Carleton, will ultimately support six scholars and six activists from Afghanistan, plus a research coordinator from Afghanistan who will be starting in mid-July. Both organizations have the capacity to vet the threats that people are facing and facilitate contact with potential host universities in the global SAR network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eleven scholars have come to Carleton through this process, and there are now more than 30 SAR chapters across Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of the urgency in Ukraine, however, SAR Carleton has been fundraising to create emergency positions for as many people as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to money from a <a href=\"https:\/\/futurefunder.carleton.ca\/campaigns\/scholars-at-risk-2\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">FutureFunder campaign<\/a> and from the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Public Affairs<\/a>, as well as private donations, a Ukrainian sociologist is currently in Poland on their way to Canada and two others from the region \u2014 including a Russian dissident scholar \u2014 could be arriving  soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is in addition to two new Afghan researchers coming to Carleton through SAR: one who has already started at the <a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sprott School of Business<\/a> and a leading scientist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full wp-image-73898\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/andrew-johnston-225w-1.jpg\" alt=\"Prof. Andrew Johnston\" class=\"wp-image-73898\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/andrew-johnston-225w-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/andrew-johnston-225w-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/andrew-johnston-225w-1-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Prof. Andrew Johnston<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The limited number of people we can consider supporting every year is frustrating,&#8221; says Carleton History Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/people\/andrew-m-johnston\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Johnston<\/a>, who is one of three co-chairs the university&#8217;s SAR committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You could build an amazing university with all of the scholars who are in exile because of their governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Carleton has to be engaged with the world,&#8221; adds Johnston, noting that the university has since its birth been a community-oriented institution \u2014 and in 2022 that means getting involved with communities far beyond Canada&#8217;s borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are part of an international movement of universities.
