This year, the experience returned in-person for the first time since the pandemic began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton\u2019s Shad experience, one of 18 programs in the country, gives high school students the opportunity to <a href=\"https:\/\/housing.carleton.ca\/future-residents\/our-buildings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">live on campus<\/a> while exploring university academics, social innovation and hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) workshops. Programming is divided into three themes: STEAM education, design-entrepreneurship and community building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe equip youth to take on social and economic challenges with a STEAM lens, while enhancing passions in the field,\u201d says Amanda Goth, Carleton\u2019s Shad program director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"broadening-paths-and-increases-readiness\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Broadening Paths and Increases Readiness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From dissecting brains in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/neuroscience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">neuroscience<\/a> lab to university lectures on such topics as <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/scs\/future-students\/graduate-studies\/programs\/data-science-hci-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">human computer interaction<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/criminology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">criminology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">psychology<\/a>, particle <a href=\"https:\/\/physics.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">physics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mechatronics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bio mechatronics<\/a>, nearly 40 Carleton faculty and staff joined forces this summer to provide a transformative experience exceeding what any high school can offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"351\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ShadCarleton_NeuroLab-300x351.jpg\" alt=\"Neuroscience lab workshop.\" class=\"wp-image-83674\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/ShadCarleton_NeuroLab-300x351.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/ShadCarleton_NeuroLab-400x469.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/ShadCarleton_NeuroLab-1400x1640.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/ShadCarleton_NeuroLab-768x900.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/ShadCarleton_NeuroLab-1311x1536.jpg 1311w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/ShadCarleton_NeuroLab-1748x2048.jpg 1748w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/ShadCarleton_NeuroLab-700x820.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/ShadCarleton_NeuroLab-200x234.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The breadth of topics proved thought provoking for participants.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI learned the world is vast and there are so many interesting topics to study,\u201d says Kowen Leskiw, a Grade 10 student from Calgary, Alberta. \u201cFrom bioengineering to micro fertilizers, to dark matter and neuroscience, it was amazing to see, and it sparked new interests within me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Beyond the classrooms and lab environments, Carleton\u2019s numerous community connections provided participants the opportunity to hear guest speakers from the National Research Council of Canada, Nuclear Waste Management, Texas Instruments, the M\u00e9tis Nation of Ontario and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants also had the chance discover the nation\u2019s capital during the program, with a visit to the House of Commons followed by a group discussion with MP Yasir Naqvi, and an exploring-the-stars workshop in rural Ottawa, hosted by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"building-connections-and-confidence\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building Connections and Confidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the academic components, the community aspect of Shad allowed plenty of opportunity for participants to forge new cross-Canada friendships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For honour roll student Nadia Goosehead from Ste. She led this year\u2019s design entrepreneurship project in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/innovationhub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Innovation Hub<\/a>, an experiential learning project where students develop a new product or service related to the national Shad Canada theme of promoting well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTwenty-five years ago, I entered the&nbsp;Shad&nbsp;program at&nbsp;Carleton as a painfully shy and nerdy teenager, deeply affected by social anxiety.&nbsp;That summer changed my life,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt Shad I learned for the first time what it meant to be part of a truly&nbsp;inclusive&nbsp;environment and gained confidence to pursue my dreams.
