Yet as the target of a vicious online hate campaign, she\u2019s been encountering it weekly.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Patel graduated from Carleton\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/journalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">School of Journalism and Communication<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;in 2019 and now covers federal politics for the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Toronto Star<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In her current role, she has been subject to a flood of harassment, including a recent online campaign set against Canadian female and racialized journalists. Then they become the next target,\u201d says Patel.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Many victims of the campaign have not held back from publicly sharing screenshots of the emails and messages they\u2019ve received, and Patel says this is important. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI think the public needs to know what the experience is to be a racialized journalist today,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s critical that people realize what it takes, and what we\u2019re contending with.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"targets-of-online-hate\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Targets of Online Hate<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to a 2022 report released by the Canadian Association of Journalists and Canadian Journalism Foundation, racialized, women and 2SLGBTQ+ journalists are the biggest targets of online hate.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalismforum.ca\/taking-care-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a survey<\/a> led by Carleton journalism professor Matthew Pearson, 56 per cent of participants reported being harassed or threated on social media. Arab, Asian and Black media workers reported the highest rates of online harassment and violence. The survey also found that in comparison to men, at least twice as many women increase security measures at work or home, leave their home city\/country\/region, change their phone number or email address, or quit social media.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cYou\u2019re constantly on guard,\u201d says Patel.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Harassment of journalists isn\u2019t a new phenomenon, but the extreme nature and prevalence of this current campaign has sparked a lot of discourse around where the solution may lie.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Megan Shaw, Carleton master of journalism graduate and CTV News Anchor, outlined some important considerations in her thesis <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/curve.carleton.ca\/b9d0d80e-474e-484d-bcc5-c6abd02fcabb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Harassment on Assignment: Gendered Emotional Labour in Canadian Newsrooms<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. She suggests newsrooms implement an email filtration system, offer online safety training and audits, work to foster inclusive environments and news coverage, and provide free mental health support.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For Patel, journalism schools also have a role to play.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s not to discourage people or make them fearful but the more tools you\u2019re armed with before entering the field, the better,\u201d says Patel.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"strategies-to-support-and-empower-students\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Strategies to Support and Empower Students<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to Carleton\u2019s journalism school\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/challenge.carleton.ca\/journalism-belonging-canadian-diversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">commitment to helping reverse decades of systemic racism and make newsrooms more inclusive<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, it is also taking strides to implement curricular changes to support students in dealing with harassment. The end goal is to build teaching modules that will be implemented into the undergraduate and graduate programs.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Carleton\u2019s journalism school will also continue to facilitate public discourse around the issue of online hate. Following the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/journalism-under-siege\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Journalism Under Siege<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> panel which took place earlier this year, the school has just announced another major event. On Sept. 27, CBC\u2019s Omayra Issa is set to deliver the 22nd annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/2022\/omayra-issa-to-deliver-2022-kesterton-lecture-black-on-the-prairies-a-journalistic-voyage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kesterton Lecture<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, where she will speak to her multimedia project <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Black on the Prairies<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the torrent of racism and online hate she\u2019s received in response to it.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Despite the most recent online hate campaign against them, many female and racialized journalists said they will not be backing down.
