says Welychka, a forward who led the team with 27 points in their first 20 games, including a career-best hat trick and three assists in the <a href=\"https:\/\/goravens.ca\/news\/2018\/01\/mhky-ravens-edge-laurentian-15-goal-thriller\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ravens&#8217; 9-6 win over Laurentian<\/a> on Jan. 12.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re men, not boys, and are looking to prove themselves again. That puts sparks under everybody&#8217;s skates.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The hockey here is faster and tougher than in the OHL,&#8221; agrees rookie forward <a href=\"https:\/\/goravens.ca\/rosters\/steege-jared\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jared Steege<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/criminology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Criminology<\/a> major who played for North Bay, Kingston and the Ottawa 67s in the OHL and led the Ravens with 14 goals after 20 games. &#8220;It&#8217;s a nice break from the grind of classes and studying.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Welychka, Steege and many of their teammates are hoping to play professionally after their university eligibility expires, either in Europe or North American leagues such as the American Hockey League (AHL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But they&#8217;re also getting an education while advancing their hockey careers. Carleton students played in a men&#8217;s senior league at the RA Centre and in exhibition games against schools such as the University of Ottawa and Algonquin College, securing sponsors so they could travel to take on university teams elsewhere in Ontario and American colleges from northern New York to Boston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The alumni who helped bring back hockey, as well as students who played from 1989 to 2007, successfully worked to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/ottawa\/carleton-ravens-return-to-varsity-hockey-after-33-years-1.668923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">re-establish varsity hockey<\/a> at Carleton for the 2007-\u201808 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The return of varsity hockey was a small piece of a large puzzle required to make the university a better place,&#8221; says hockey alumnus and Ravens Hall of Fame member, <a href=\"https:\/\/goravens.ca\/hall-of-fame\/correy-paul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul Correy<\/a>, who helped launch the club team and restore varsity status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-8435\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/raven-hockey-power-ups-1200w-3.jpg\" alt=\"Ravens Hockey Power Ups\" class=\"wp-image-8435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/raven-hockey-power-ups-1200w-3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/raven-hockey-power-ups-1200w-3-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/raven-hockey-power-ups-1200w-3-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/raven-hockey-power-ups-1200w-3-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/raven-hockey-power-ups-1200w-3-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/raven-hockey-power-ups-1200w-3-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Forward Jared Steege<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The success of varsity hockey and other varsity sports programs has helped spread the Carleton name across Canada. The arena rings with the slap of sticks on pucks and skates slicing across the ice during bursts of rapid action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A coach&#8217;s whistle blows, the players huddle for a quick strategy session, and then the drills resume. One-on-one battles for the puck. Breakout plays.
