he says, describing the range of hardware in the shop, from old-school lathes to Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines. &#8220;We like to work with our hands. And there are a lot of things you can&#8217;t buy off the shelf.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mae\/profile\/matthew-johnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew Johnson<\/a> burst into the shop recently with a unique ask. A pair of his graduate students were flying to Finland in a couple hours to <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/eerl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">measure emissions<\/a> from a giant flare across the border in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technician Nick Thomas quickly made an adaptor to attach a large telephoto lens to their scientific camera, machinist Kevin Sangster made a silver lens plate so they could image the sun, and the students made it to the airport on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, Proctor has worked on everything from flight simulators, drones and race cars to a box to house the valves of an experimental artificial heart and a pig brain slicer for research on <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/helmet-testing-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">helmets and head injuries<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Technical staff like Alex are our institutional memory,&#8221; says Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mae\/profile\/jeremy-laliberte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeremy Laliberte<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re able to quickly come up with innovative solutions to manufacturing problems while sharing their wisdom with students.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-84531 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/karl-wasslen-1200x680-1.jpg\" alt=\"A man wearing blue surgical gloves works on a machine in a workshop\" class=\"wp-image-84531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/karl-wasslen-1200x680-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/karl-wasslen-1200x680-1-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/karl-wasslen-1200x680-1-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/karl-wasslen-1200x680-1-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/karl-wasslen-1200x680-1-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/karl-wasslen-1200x680-1-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"learning-by-doing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning By Doing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, a student was in the shop welding an incubator frame for a project that&#8217;s exploring ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/engineering-design\/2020\/new-funding-supports-carleton-research-on-enhancing-infant-safety-during-medical-transportation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">improve infant safety during medical transportation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our biggest impact is introducing students to the manufacturing,&#8221; says Proctor. &#8220;When students participate, their designs get better. He and Wasslen have worked with local brewery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/ottawa\/broadhead-beer-carleton-1.3242139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Broadhead<\/a> on a project to investigate optimal beer storage conditions and with local coffee company <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/carleton-bridgehead-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bridgehead<\/a> to explore the intricacies of coffee bean aging. says Gordon.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s great to see their work go from an idea on a chalkboard to a product in their hands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Over in the basement of the Loeb Building, Geography and Environmental Studies lab tech <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/geography\/people\/ngo-quang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quang Ngo<\/a> has been helping students and professors on a long list of projects for more than 20 years: augers for extracting ice core samples, weather monitoring tools, hip waders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I like puzzles and trying to figure things out,&#8221; says Ngo, who also handles shipping and receiving and helps out at departmental picnics. &#8220;Professors teach students and lead the research, but I have to make sure the equipment works.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll do anything I can to help students,&#8221;
