Although school is one of the places where children learn how to make sense of the world, the education system can be a difficult environment to navigate, especially for those who are already facing obstacles \u2014 a concern amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton University&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">psychology<\/a>&nbsp;researcher&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/people\/maria-a-rogers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maria Rogers<\/a>&nbsp;brings together two important areas of study for children and youth \u2014 mental health and education \u2014 to improve our understanding of how they interact. In his lab at Carleton University, he raises hundreds of the insects. Its purpose, according to the American Press Institute, is to provide people &#8220;with the information they need to make the best possible decisions about their lives, their communities, their societies and their governments.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When news outlets and digital media platforms don&#8217;t reflect the communities they serve, however, journalism can lead to polarized views and social discord\u2014one of the fundamental challenges of the 21st century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Carleton University, home to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/journalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">oldest journalism school in Canada<\/a>, faculty are striving to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/journalism\/equity-and-inclusion\/accountability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reverse decades of systemic racism<\/a>&nbsp;and make newsrooms more inclusive and diverse by teaching the next generation of journalists to share stories that capture the country&#8217;s broad spectrum of perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pair of new professors and the groundbreaking courses they teach are a big part of this transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/challenge.carleton.ca\/journalism-belonging-canadian-diversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learn more<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Empowering the Next Generation of Journalists to Challenge the Status Quo\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/710516163?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"empowering-female-tech-founders\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Empowering Female Tech Founders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When an entrepreneur wants to launch a company, they typically seek start-up funding through their personal networks or, if they have a track record in business, from conventional sources such as bank loans, government grants and venture capitalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if they&#8217;re new to entrepreneurship and aren&#8217;t close to people with the means to invest in their vision, it can be difficult to get off the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenges faced by first-time founders \u2014 especially women \u2014 were the inspiration for a group of 10 current and former female employees of the e-commerce giant&nbsp;Shopify, who in March 2021 established&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.backboneangels.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Backbone Angels<\/a>, a collective of investors dedicated to supporting businesses and ideas that are often overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Konval Matin, a Carleton University commerce graduate, and her partners at Backbone Angels decide as individuals whether to invest and what amount.
