During high school she was part of many extracurriculars <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;she was class president and treasurer, vice-president of the students\u2019 association, captain of the basketball team, a member of the choir and an active volunteer.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When she joined Carleton, Berbeck&nbsp;knew she wanted to continue being involved in school life. She started attending events held by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BSACARLETONU\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Black Student Alliance<\/a>, Carleton&#8217;s Black student association. She found there were very few BIPOC RFs and residence managers, which made it hard for herself and fellow students to feel comfortable in sharing their experiences. She also realized that there weren\u2019t many events and initiatives catered to BIPOC communities.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cResidence is a home away from home, so it\u2019s imperative that we all feel recognized,\u201d she says. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Not someone to stand by and watch, Berbeck&nbsp;and some fellow RFs organized an event called Black at CU in response.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe felt like we weren&#8217;t seen as much as we would like to be,\u201d says Berbeck. \u201cWe wanted to host this event to share our experiences of being Black students living in residence. We talked about how we feel and where we wanted to see improvement and the staff were super receptive.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Following the event, Berbeck and the other organizers took their advocacy a step further. They launched a group called BIPOC Residence Life Connections. The group\u2019s goal was to provide a safe space for residence staff to connect, and to allow them to anonymously share thoughts and concerns with managers.&nbsp; <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In her third year, Berbeck began working as a community developer for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/housing.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Housing and Residence Life Services<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which allowed her to expand her&nbsp;scope of involvement even more.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI loved that position, because instead of just focusing on my floor, I was able to focus on all residence students and residence life staff,\u201d Berbeck says. \u201cIt felt really good to be part of that and to be able to advocate for change at that level.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Itching to do more, Berbeck joined the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/new-names-new-times\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Names for New Times<\/a> Committee in August 2021 as the only student representative. The initiative was launched to rename three campus buildings and to reflect Carleton\u2019s diversity and commitment to inclusion. The committee is made up of faculty and staff leaders at Carleton who are tasked with coordinating the renaming of the buildings through discussions and deliberations with various communities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMy job was to act as a voice for the student body,\u201d she said. \u201cI also had the opportunity to be a part of the conversations with BIPOC communities, which was an amazing learning experience.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Berbeck was intimidated to be a part of such an important project at first, but she said the encouragement from the committee helped her feel like she belonged.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThey made me feel seen and heard, and always made sure to reinforce the fact that I deserved to be there and that my opinion mattered,\u201d Berbeck says.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As Black woman, Berbeck believes that this kind of encouragement is vital and hopes that she can pass it along to others.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBeing a Black woman, we are often scared to step into spaces and to speak up. But our voices matter. If we see a problem, it is never going to be fixed unless we use our voice,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s with anything in life <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;school, relationships, work <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;your voice matters and it needs to be heard.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For Berbeck, this is part of why Black History Month is so important <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;to elevate the voices of Black people and to celebrate their triumphs.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBlack people are creating history,\u201d says Berbeck. \u201cWe\u2019re recreating achievements, redoing things.
