rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG)<\/a> is home to an extraordinary exhibition celebrating the art of renowned Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau (Copper Thunderbird).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cuag.ca\/exhibition\/norval-morrisseau-medicine-currents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Norval Morrisseau: Medicine Currents<\/em><\/a> showcases an exclusive collection of Morrisseau&#8217;s paintings, drawings and objects, co-curated by Carleton art historian <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/aah\/people\/carmen-robertson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carmen Robertson<\/a> and Danielle Printup, CUAG&#8217;s Indigenous cultural engagement \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robertson is the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/distinctions\/canada-research-chairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canada Research Chair<\/a> in North American Indigenous Visual and Material Culture and a published expert on the striking and colourful work of the late Norval Morrisseau, who is considered the <em>Mishomis<\/em>, or grandfather, of contemporary Indigenous art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s such an honour,&#8221; says Robertson, a Scots-Lakota professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences<\/a> at Carleton. &#8220;It&#8217;s one thing to write about and deeply know his work, but curating it feels different.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;To see so much of Morrisseau&#8217;s work together in one room is a rare and powerful experience. It&#8217;s important that people come to a show like this, in a space like this, to meet him on their own terms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A self-taught painter from the Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation, Morrisseau founded the Woodland Style art movement with his use of dynamic thick black lines and eye-catchingly vibrant colour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He created a visual vocabulary, an inherently Indigenous way of visual expression, that&#8217;s become so foundational people assume it&#8217;s just always been around,&#8221; explains Robertson, who says she kept spotting elements of Morrisseau&#8217;s style while staying at reservations across Canada during a cross-country drive from Ottawa to the Yukon this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In curating this exhibition, Robertson and Printup focused on what they refer to as the &#8220;healing aesthetic&#8221; present throughout Morrisseau&#8217;s catalogue \u2013 specifically, the artist&#8217;s belief that color could heal you and the artworks themselves are medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this way, Printup explains, <em>Medicine Currents<\/em> is deeply relevant to our current moment.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve just faced a summer of destructive weather due to climate change and ongoing circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,&#8221; says Printup, who is from Kitigan Zibi Anishnabeg.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As Indigenous people living on the territory, our survival is dependent on our bodies and the land being healthy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-89314 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/norval-morrisseau-exhibit-1200x680-7.jpg\" alt=\"A view of the Norval Morrisseau Exhibit at the Carleton University Art Gallery\" class=\"wp-image-89314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/norval-morrisseau-exhibit-1200x680-7.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/norval-morrisseau-exhibit-1200x680-7-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/norval-morrisseau-exhibit-1200x680-7-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/norval-morrisseau-exhibit-1200x680-7-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/norval-morrisseau-exhibit-1200x680-7-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/norval-morrisseau-exhibit-1200x680-7-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"woodlands-school-artists-in-conversation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Woodlands School Artists in Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>CUAG is holding several special events to celebrate the new Morrisseau exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Oct.4, the public is invited to attend a free guided tour of the exhibition led by co-curators Robertson and Printup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gallery is also hosting a <a href=\"https:\/\/cuag.ca\/event\/visiting-with-morrisseau\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">free public gathering<\/a> on Nov. 18-19 for Anishinaabe artists, Elders, knowledge keepers and community members from Anishinaabe Aki to share stories around Morrisseau and <a href=\"https:\/\/cuag.ca\/exhibition\/christian-chapman-run-to-the-hills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christian Chapman<\/a> \u2013 a mixed media artist from Fort William First Nation whose work is also on display at CUAG this semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was Printup&#8217;s idea to pair the Morrisseau exhibit with another featuring a fellow Anishinaabe artist immersed in the Woodlands style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been a fan of Chapman&#8217;s work ever since I first learned of his practice,&#8221; she shares. &#8220;He brings a critical edge and a sense of humor to his art, blending pop culture with the lived experiences of Anishinaabe and Indigenous peoples today. Bringing his work into conversation with Morrisseau&#8217;s felt like a natural fit.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;The two exhibitions are almost family, if you think about how art histories are related from an Indigenous perspective.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cuag.ca\/exhibition\/norval-morrisseau-medicine-currents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Norval Morrisseau: Medicine Currents<\/em><\/a><em> and <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/cuag.ca\/exhibition\/christian-chapman-run-to-the-hills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Christian Chapman: Run to the Hills!<\/em><\/a><em> will be on display from September 17 &#8211; December 10, 2023 at the Carleton University Art Gallery, located in the St. Patrick&#8217;s Building at the north end of campus.
