Her thesis addresses the built environment and student mental health on campus, examining locations where students go or avoid based on their emotions or coping strategies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Identifying as a person with both visible and non-visible disabilities, Malcolm Edwards\u2019 own experience and observations of how she felt in different environments drew her to this area of research. As universities focus on providing effective mental health supports to students, where they go on campus is an important aspect of student life to explore.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe often look at our programs and services, and we have tremendous mental health supports, but are we looking at the thing that we spend 90 per cent of our time in \u2013 the built environment?\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She notes that the work she was doing in her degree and the mission of her full-time position as the lead of implementation of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/accessibility-institute\/accessibility-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the Coordinated Accessibility Strategy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> at Carleton were very complementary.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cLooking at the student experience on campus is part of Carleton\u2019s accessibility strategy, so it was very much a part of what I was doing in my day job,\u201d she says. \u201cThere was a nice synergy between them. He began at square one by obtaining an accounting diploma.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A few years later his family decided to move, ultimately choosing to make their permanent home in Ottawa. As part of his journey to become a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA),\u202fHabibzadeh took a course at Carleton\u2019s\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sprott School of Business<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Though it was challenging, his success inspired him to pursue his\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/macc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Master of Accounting (MACC)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fdegree. The program takes place over the course of two summers and includes an eight-month internship, which was of special interest to Habibzadeh.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSince this is a new city for me, I didn\u2019t know anybody,\u201d he says. \u201cIt is an intense program, but you can make lots of connections with people who are in the accounting field and can learn from proficient teachers.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Habibzadeh\u202fbegan the MACC program in the summer of 2022 and received five offers of employment for his internship term. He completed his second summer term this year and wrote his\u202fCPA Canada Common Final Examination (CFE). classmates who shared their family\u2019s experiences of starting over in Canada, highlighting that\u202fHabibzadeh was modeling a path forward for his two children in their new home.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ten years ago, as a practising speech-language clinician, Jacquie Ballantine noticed that her case load of the previous two and a half decades had been increasingly focused on been teaching with Carleton\u2019s\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/slals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">School of Linguistics and Languages Studies (SLaLS)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fin addition to running her private practice. During that time, she began to realize that some autistic people she had worked with as children were now taking her course as students.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIt was a wonderful opportunity,\u201d she says. \u201cThey gave me insight into their experiences and what it\u2019s like to be in a university as an autistic student \u2013 what worked well, what didn\u2019t, what was challenging.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThat is what led me to my research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ballantine began her PhD in 2017, working with groups of autistic and non-autistic students and faculty. She learned about the lived experiences of autistic students at university and the common mutual miscommunications between the students and their non-autistic peers and instructors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">She presented her research in Carleton\u2019s\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IHC-GKYV47o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Three Minute Thesis competition<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, where she won second place and went on to represent Carleton in the regional finals. Her work on the subject has been published in three peer-reviewed journals.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Over the course of her studies, she found that some autistic participants were interested in becoming more involved in the research \u2013 opening the door to improved participatory research and helping to establish the participatory research group\u202fassociated with the webpage <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/autism_cu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Autism_CU<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.
