The lab studies the association between diabetes and exposure to persistent organic pollutants found in the environment, including in food, household and commercial products. She completed her Bachelor of Science degree (Honours) in Cellular and Molecular Biology at Carleton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been interested in biology and human health. Her interest in the community mental health practicum led her to pursue a concentration in <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/stream-in-mental-health-and-well-being\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mental Health and Well-Being<\/a>, an experience she recommends to anyone in psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good way to test out whether clinical psychology is the right path for you,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working as an undergraduate TA with the Statistics department made Hatton realize her love for teaching and mentorship, leading to her focus in experimental psychology and academia.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBe present in classes, answer questions and have dialogues with the faculty because the more you get to know them, the more opportunities you\u2019re going to have. This will help you figure out what little corner within the vast discipline of psychology fits your interest best,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Hatton has begun her master&#8217;s program in forensic psychology with Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/people\/kevin-nunes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Nunes<\/a> and is now working in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/acbrlab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aggressive Cognitions and Behaviour Research lab<\/a> at Carleton which investigates the target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Neuroscience<\/a> and a minor in psychology, Medland Spence decided to build on those courses and pursue a full bachelor&#8217;s degree in psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s interesting to know what makes people the way they are, and I was able to dive into science in the program,\u201d she says, noting that addiction psychology and mental health are research areas she is interested in.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>One of her favorite courses in the program was Sports and Performance Psychology which she applied in her role as a figure skating coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to required courses for their degree program, Medland Spence recommends first year students to \u201cgo at your own pace and try and take classes you will enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure contributing to the International Space Station Archaeological Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brousseau, who is graduating with a Master of Arts in <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">History<\/a> with a specialization in <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cuids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Data Science<\/a>, helped an international team of archaeologists document the cultural heritage of the International Space Station (ISS) through the development of an open-source image annotation application. This experience formed the basis of her master&#8217;s research project.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe opportunities I have been given in this program related to and outside my research like working with the ISS have been excellent,\u201d she says. \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to seek diverse opportunities within your department.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Brousseau\u2019s undergraduate studies at Carleton developed her interest in the social history of early modern Europe, leading to her focus on marginalia found in early modern texts. Timms is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology with a concentration in <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/research\/research-areas\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health Psychology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the supervision of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/healthpsychlab\/people\/rachel-burns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prof. Rachel Burns,<\/a> the director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/healthpsychlab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health Psychology Lab,<\/a> Timms completed a thesis examining links between loneliness, social isolation, and physical activity among adults with diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI enjoyed learning about the different facets of this project, as well as about the process of undertaking psychological research and analysis,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her research interests are focused on mental health and the experiences of people living with mental health conditions, as well as potential options for improving their quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Timms has also volunteered in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/pair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Positive Activities in Intimate Relationships (PAIR) lab<\/a> under the leadership of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/people\/cheryl-harasymchuk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prof. Cheryl Harasymchuk<\/a>. She credits the experience for giving her exposure to research projects on subjects outside of health.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI was able to gain some hands-on experience with basic research tasks such as coding data and doing a literature review,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The program has introduced Timms to different careers in psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI particularly enjoyed the Introduction to Clinical Skills and the Helping Professions course I took.
