href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/mission-possible\/\"><span class=\"Hyperlink0\">Joana Rocha<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"Body\">In early January, after a couple years of design work, correspondence, fabrication, installation and calibration, Carleton\u2019s new Aeroacoustics Testing Laboratory in the university<span lang=\"FR\">\u2019<\/span><span lang=\"DE\">s <span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/aerospace\/our-facilities\/wind-tunnels\/\">High-Speed Wind Tunnel<\/a>&nbsp;f<\/span><\/span><\/span>acility was finally ready for its first experiments.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"DE\">\u201c<\/span>You have no idea how I felt when this equipment arrived,<span lang=\"DE\">\u201d <\/span>says Rocha, a professor in the <span lang=\"DE\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mae\/\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering<\/span><\/a><\/span>&nbsp;whose research on aeroacoustics,<span lang=\"DE\">&nbsp;<\/span>structural acoustics and turbulence modelling is aimed at developing quieter aircraft.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"DE\">\u201cIt<\/span><span lang=\"FR\">\u2019<\/span><span lang=\"DE\">s a big milestone,\u201d <\/span>continues Rocha, who designed the chamber and components with her team, providing manufacturers <span lang=\"DE\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eckel.ca\/\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Eckel Industries<\/span><\/a><\/span>&nbsp;and <span lang=\"DE\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hts.com\/\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">HTS Ottawa<\/span><\/a><\/span>&nbsp;with the drawings they needed for construction. <span lang=\"DE\">\u201c<\/span>It means that the basic foundation for my research is now here, and that my students and I have access to a state-of-the-art setup that<span lang=\"FR\">\u2019s unique in Canada.<\/span><span lang=\"DE\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"Body\">The test section <span lang=\"DE\">\u2014 <\/span>a chamber with thick walls and a thick door <span lang=\"DE\">\u2014 <\/span>looks a like a recording studio. The interior is covered by acoustic insulation wedges sheathed in perforated metal to deaden sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"Body\">Four large floor-to-ceiling air tanks with a total volume of 26 cubic metres, powered by a 100-horsepower compressor, are connected to the chamber through a custom designed nozzle which can send air into the test section at speeds of up to Mach 1.4 <span lang=\"DE\">\u2014&nbsp;<\/span>40 per cent faster than the speed of sound.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-9002 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/rocha-bg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9002\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/rocha-bg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/rocha-bg-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/rocha-bg-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/rocha-bg-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/rocha-bg-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/rocha-bg-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"Body\">Although preliminary experiments remain within the Mach 0.3 to 0.8 range and are focused on using extremely sensitive microphones to record the sounds of air flow to gain a better understand of turbulence-induced noise during flight, the test area is adaptable in myriad ways and can also be used to assess the performance of wings, fuselage panels and other aircraft components.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"DE\">\u201c<\/span><span lang=\"FR\">We don\u2019<\/span>t want to close any doors,<span lang=\"DE\">\u201d <\/span>says Rocha. <span lang=\"DE\">\u201cWe <\/span>plan to add new features and modify the chamber if required over time to pursue multiple research directions.<span lang=\"DE\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"Body\">Typically, explains Rocha, computer models used to predict turbulence-induced noise must be validated with expensive flight tests. <span lang=\"DE\">\u201c<\/span>With this equipment,<span lang=\"DE\">\u201d <\/span>she says, <span lang=\"DE\">\u201cwe\u2019re&nbsp;<\/span>aiming to develop wind tunnel testing frameworks which closely reproduce Mach conditions during flight, possibly decreasing the number of flight tests required, to improve existing acoustic prediction <span lang=\"DA\">models<\/span>and help develop novel and quieter aircraft structures. This is a natural evolution for my research.<span lang=\"DE\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"less-noise-is-safer\" class=\"wp-block-heading Body\"><span lang=\"DE\">Less Noise is Safer <b><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"Body\">Reducing noise inside and outside airplanes in flight is a safety issue as well as an element of comfort for passengers and crews in a competitive global industry where traffic is expected to double within two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"DE\">Aircraft noise \u2014 <\/span>which can come from the engine and turbulent air flow around the fuselage, wings and landing gear <span lang=\"DE\">\u2014 <\/span>is an economic issue, too. She also connects noise to environmental sustainability. An <span lang=\"DE\">\u201celegant\u201d <\/span>airplane with an aerodynamic engine and structure will be both quieter and more fuel efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"Body\">One of her current projects is funded by the Consortium for Research and Innovation in Aerospace in Qu<span lang=\"DE\">\u00e9<\/span>bec (<span lang=\"DE\"><a href=\"http:\/\/caric.aero\/\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">CRIAQ<\/span><\/a><\/span>), and involves collaboration with <span lang=\"DE\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bombardier.com\/en\/aerospace.html\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Bombardier Aerospace<\/span><\/a><\/span>&nbsp;and <span lang=\"DE\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mdsaero.com\/\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">MDS Corporation<\/span><\/a><\/span>, and with colleagues at the University of Toronto and the Universit<span lang=\"DE\">\u00e9<\/span>de Sherbrooke, with additional support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"Body\">Two of Rocha<span lang=\"FR\">\u2019<\/span>s graduate students are conducting tests with the new equipment in Carleton<span lang=\"FR\">\u2019<\/span><span lang=\"DE\">s Mackenzie Building<\/span>and Minto Centre, with students from U of T and Sherbrooke and possibly professional engineers from Bombardier and other aerospace companies, as well as the National Research Council and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), coming to use it too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"Body\">Everybody must leave the High-Speed Wind Tunnel lab when experiments are underway because the sound and air pressure are so intense. They can watch from the control room, and results are logged by a computer for data processing and analysis using customized software.<span lang=\"DE\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"531\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/rocha-sm2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9003\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/rocha-sm2.jpg 750w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/rocha-sm2-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/rocha-sm2-400x283.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/rocha-sm2-700x496.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/rocha-sm2-200x142.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"DE\">\u201c<\/span>There<span lang=\"FR\">\u2019<\/span>s a lot of potential for our team to develop new models that can predict turbulence-induced noise during flight,<span lang=\"DE\">\u201d <\/span>says Rocha, explaining that previously she and her students and collaborators had to do tests using a low-speed wind tunnel and extrapolate the results to replicate flight conditions, which is not as accurate. <span lang=\"DE\">\u201c<\/span>Ultimately, this will help us develop better aircraft structures, such as more efficient wing shapes, fuselage panels and landing gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"DE\">\u201cIt<\/span><span lang=\"FR\">\u2019<\/span><span lang=\"DE\">s extremely rare,\u201d <\/span>she adds, <span lang=\"DE\">\u201c<\/span>for students to be able to use this kind of setup. They<span lang=\"FR\">\u2019<\/span>ll be doing design work, testing ideas, taking measurements and processing signals <span lang=\"DE\">\u2014&nbsp;<\/span>all very valuable skills, which will not only be helpful for Canada\u2019s aerospace industry but also their future careers.<span lang=\"DE\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was the best late Christmas present ever for Joana Rocha.
