critically important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scholars selected by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fulbright.ca\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America (Fulbright Canada)<\/a> have the opportunity to take part in a <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/deputyprovost\/jobs\/fulbright\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">residential program<\/a> that fosters mutual understanding between our two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unique to Carleton University are its four <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/carleton-fulbright-collaborate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fulbright Canada Distinguished Research Chairs<\/a> which offer scholars id=\"distinguished-chair-offers-more-time-for-research\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Distinguished Chair Offers More Time for Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Michele Lewis is the Fulbright Canada Distinguished Chair in Arts and Social Sciences in Canada and North America. A professor of psychological sciences from Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina, Lewis joined Carleton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Feminist Institute of Social Transformation<\/a> (FIST) in August 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a Fulbright scholar, Lewis is working on her research project, <i>Black \u201cLGBTQ+\u201d Psychology: Understanding collective self-determination, Afrocentrism and optimal identity.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/2023\/10\/fulbright-scholar-michele-lewis-bridging-gaps-in-2slgbtq-black-psychology-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">project will bring together<\/a> 20 participants for virtual emotional emancipation circles &#8211; safe spaces for people of African descent to connect, discuss their experiences and work towards wellness and authentic as broadly inclusive of people of African descent as possible,\u201d says Lewis, \u201cand I don\u2019t think that there\u2019s been any targeted work applying them with people who might be identified as of the Black queer intersecting identity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lewis was drawn to Carleton\u2019s nine-month Fulbright option as her project required a semester to make contact with potential participants.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m pleased to say that because I had August through December to meet people and continuously share about the project, I believe it helped me secure 10 participants from the U.S. and 10 from Canada,\u201d says Lewis. \u201cSeveral of the other Fulbright opportunities were limited to one semester, which would have hindered me in reaching my goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>During her Fulbright term, Lewis has delivered a lecture at the University of Ottawa and held a workshop with the Black Coalition of AIDS Prevention in Toronto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lewis did not have Carleton research connections prior to joining the campus community and has now established new professional relationships across disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m an interdisciplinary thinker,\u201d she says. \u201cI&#8217;ve had a chance to engage with professors in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institute of African Studies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/iis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies<\/a>, and some of the graduate students within women and id=\"a-dynamic-location-and-connected-community\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Dynamic Location and Connected Community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Elizabeth Tandy Shermer joins Carleton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/polisci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Political Science<\/a> as the Fulbright Canada Distinguished Chair in Public Affairs in North America: Society, Policy, Media. A person&#8217;s life world \u2013 what they bring to the situation \u2013 influences that.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abboud will be able to leverage new professional connections with two major research networks at Carleton, the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Migration and Diaspora Studies<\/a> (MDS) network and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/lerrn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Local Engagement Refugee Research Network<\/a> (LERRN.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhat&#8217;s beautiful about MDS and LERRN is that they are very much interdisciplinary networks, and that is invaluable as I start this research.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The university\u2019s strong connections to government institutions and civil society groups lends itself well to Abboud\u2019s research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cProximity to settlement organizations and proximity to the government is very important,\u201d he says. \u201cI&#8217;m already seeing how being at Carleton has expanded the kinds of questions that I want to ask.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>_<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/our-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">More Stories<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In our increasingly interconnected world, cross-border academic exchange is critically important.
