A map on the laptop\u2019s screen shows its location, speed, braking status and other parameters thanks to an On-Board Unit (OBU) in the RAV4 \u2014&nbsp;and the networking and coding prowess of Carleton undergraduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This demonstration of connected vehicle technology on April 12, organized by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csit.carleton.ca\/~fyu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Richard Yu<\/a>, who is cross-appointed to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csit.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">School of Information Technology<\/a> and Department of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Systems and Computer Engineering<\/a>, is part of the university\u2019s contribution to Ottawa\u2019s evolution into an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ottawaavcluster.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">international R&amp;D hub<\/a> for connected and autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Connecting Autonomous Vehicles in Ottawa\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A0bqvkrlsCg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost car accidents happen because you don\u2019t know what other vehicles are doing or going to do,\u201d says Yu, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/engineering-design\/winter-2018\/?page=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">connected and autonomous car<\/a> research is <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/2017\/10\/12\/carletons-richard-yu-receives-funding-for-research-on-connected-and-autonomous-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supported<\/a> by Defence Research and Development Canada and Public Safety Canada\u2019s Canadian Safety and Security Program (CSSP).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe can prevent accidents by developing the communications technology that allows vehicles to know what\u2019s happening in the environment and with other vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The on-campus demo used cars purchased by Carleton with support from the CSSP, Transport Canada and BlackBerry software subsidiary QNX, which operates the <a href=\"http:\/\/blackberry.qnx.com\/en\/blackberry-qnx-autonomous-vehicle-innovation-centre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Centre<\/a> at its Kanata headquarters. Yu\u2019s research on improving the security and bandwidth of super-fast 5G wireless networks is an important piece of this puzzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe research we do here at Carleton on fully autonomous vehicles will lead to the introduction of more efficient active safety features that will improve road safety,\u201d says Vice-President (Research and International) Rafik Goubran. \u201cAdditionally, increasing the automation level in vehicles will extend the number of years of driving for older drivers, assisting with their mobility and social engagement. That\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to address.
