His work has been informed through his own experience and that of his family and community. In particular, regarding the use of Indigenous lands by private industry for economic interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Part of evolving the power and strengthening the way that Indigenous law is enforced on the front lines involves opening up a working-class struggle,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Because it&#8217;s sustained through the redistribution of goods that derive from the circuits of wage-labour and capital.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His interdisciplinary research conducted a historical analysis of the land back movement and analyzed the conditions that sustain frontline Indigenous water protection and land defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m proud of the work I did,&#8221; says Carlson. &#8220;To ultimately provide some clarity on the movement, to enhance it, to empower people and to contribute to that process.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, Carlson accepted a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in Indigenous Justice and Decolonization in the Department of Criminology at the University of Ottawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carlson encourages future students to listen to themselves and discover the things that drive them, instead of adhering to a pre-defined, linear path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Instead of focusing on disciplines, consider what your social responsibilities are and then I think the rest really falls in line as you pursue that,&#8221; he says. &#8220;It will take you in the right direction.&#8221;<a name=\"2\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"governor-general-silver-medal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Governor General Silver Medal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"yousef-yassin-bachelor-of-engineering-computer-systems\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Yousef Yassin, Bachelor of Engineering, Computer Systems<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When first enrolling at Carleton, Yousef Yassin knew he would pursue engineering but wanted to ensure that the field he chose was one that would keep many doors open to new opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright wp-image-92752 size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/yousef_photo-1.jpeg\" alt=\"A photo of Yousef Yassin\" class=\"wp-image-92752\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/yousef_photo-1.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/yousef_photo-1-300x356.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/yousef_photo-1-200x237.jpeg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Yousef Yassin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I chose <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.carleton.ca\/programs\/computer-systems-engineering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Computer Systems<\/a> because of its versatility \u2013 tackling relevant, transferrable skills from both hardware and software perspectives,&#8221; he says. &#8220;It offered a broad selection of other subjects I was interested in \u2013 like robotics, and machine learning.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to his coursework, Yassin completed <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/co-op\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">co-op placements<\/a>&nbsp;with Mission Control, Ouster and Signiant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Each experience was invaluable, allowing me to explore different fields and work environments,&#8221; he says. &#8220;I gradually discovered which aspects of professional life I enjoyed and which ones I didn&#8217;t, informing my future career choices.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yassin notes the industry experience accelerated his growth as an engineer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He held many roles during his time at Carleton, including working as a&nbsp;teaching assistant, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/engineering-design\/emlc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMLC<\/a>&nbsp;engineering scholar, and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/csas\/pass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PASS<\/a>&nbsp;facilitator. In his final year at Carleton, he was involved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/future-learning-lab\/i-cureus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I-CUREUS program<\/a> working on machine learning research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his advice to future students, he underscores the importance of taking risks despite initial hesitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s natural to feel lost and anxious when learning something new,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Stay persistent and embrace this discomfort \u2013 it will fade.&#8221;<a name=\"3\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;ll probably surprise yourself with what you can accomplish.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"peter-bailey-bachelor-of-computer-science-honours\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peter Bailey, Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When determining his undergraduate path, Peter Bailey was drawn to the <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.carleton.ca\/programs\/computer-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Computer Science<\/a> program as a way to utilize his passion for math and science while exploring the field of software development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft wp-image-92755 size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"318\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Peter-Bailey-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of Peter Bailey\" class=\"wp-image-92755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Peter-Bailey-2-1.jpg 350w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Peter-Bailey-2-1-300x273.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Peter-Bailey-2-1-200x182.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Peter Bailey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of his time at Carleton, he completed three co-op internships at the National Research Council, Elections Canada and JSI Telecom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I had a very positive experience with my co-op placements,&#8221; he says, noting multiple roles provided a variety of experience. &#8220;Public and private companies have differing goals but share many of the same development practices.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that his undergraduate degree is complete, Bailey looks forward to pursuing industry opportunities in the software development and engineering field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on his time at Carleton, he notes that the highlight of his years on campus was the people he met throughout his degree. says Bourguignon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A highlight of Bourguignon\u2019s time at Carleton was her research on parents\u2019 storytelling styles who are from diverse linguistic backgrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I learned so much through completing my honours thesis, but most importantly, I learned that I love the research process,&#8221; she says. &#8220;This passion for knowledge generation is what motivated me to pursue a master\u2019s in linguistics at Carleton next year.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bourguignon\u2019s advice to future students is to get engaged with their program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Though the prospect of getting involved is incredibly intimidating at first, I think my active engagement in classes with my professors and peers contributed enormously to my success and made my experience at Carleton unforgettable.&#8221;<a name=\"7\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"maryna-nekrasova-bachelor-of-humanities-combined-honours-in-philosophy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maryna Nekrasova, Bachelor of Humanities (Combined Honours in Philosophy)<strong><br>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Maryna Nekrasova knew she wanted to pursue philosophy and was drawn to the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/bhum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">College of the Humanities\u2019 Great Books program.<\/a> She realized that many of the texts that would be explored were ones she had long planned on studying outside of school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft wp-image-92759 size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"383\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chancellors-medal-portrait-2.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of Maryna Nekrasova\" class=\"wp-image-92759\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Chancellors-medal-portrait-2.jpg 350w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Chancellors-medal-portrait-2-300x328.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Chancellors-medal-portrait-2-200x219.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Maryna Nekrasova<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It allowed me to have a very broad education in just about everything I was interested in,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nekrasova made the most of her time on campus, taking part in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/future-learning-lab\/sapp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Students as Partners Program<\/a>, winning a <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/current-students\/carleton-university-research-opportunity-curop-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carleton University Research Opportunity<\/a> grant, and completing an I-CUREUS research internship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her research opportunities allowed her to explore how cultural and philosophical factors influence people&#8217;s perspectives about artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, she founded <a href=\"https:\/\/ojs.library.carleton.ca\/index.php\/ipso\/issue\/view\/251\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Ipso Facto: The Carleton Journal of Interdisciplinary Humanities<\/em><\/a>, a student-run academic journal. In 2023, she organized the Humanities Annual Colloquium, won the Peter J. Ricketts Outstanding Provost Scholar Award, and represented the Humanities program on the Carleton Academic Student Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nekrasova believes the College of the Humanities was the perfect place to pursue her academic ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It was the right program for me, and it really led to such great outcomes,&#8221; she says. &#8220;I&#8217;m not sure I would have had the same kind of experience if I went somewhere else.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nekrasova will be undertaking a PhD program in Philosophy at McGill University this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She encourages future students to not shy away from potential opportunities.<br>\n<a name=\"8\"><\/a><br>\n&#8220;If you have doubts about how competitive your application is, apply anyway because you may be surprised,&#8221; she says. &#8220;You might get it and it would lead to other really great things.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"ashley-brunelle-bachelor-of-health-sciences-honours\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ashley Brunelle, Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When choosing her degree, Ashley Brunelle was inspired by her grandfather to pursue a Bachelor of Health Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full wp-image-92786\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"494\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ashley-Brunelle-final-1.jpeg\" alt=\"A photo of Ashley Brunelle \" class=\"wp-image-92786\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Ashley-Brunelle-final-1.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Ashley-Brunelle-final-1-300x423.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Ashley-Brunelle-final-1-200x282.jpeg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ashley Brunelle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He was in and out of the hospital a lot with chronic conditions,&#8221; says Brunelle. &#8220;We would talk about his experiences and it got me interested in health care. I was looking for a degree that combined both health care and science and found it at Carleton.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing from her family\u2019s experience she decided to focus her studies with a concentration in Chronic Illness and Disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A highlight of her time at Carleton was her placement with Girls SySTEM Mentorship (GSM) program, where she conducted research aimed at helping girls in high school feel represented in STEM fields. Her efforts contributed to practice recommendations for the GSM program, incorporating an intersectional perspective to better support students from diverse identities and backgrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the classroom, she also founded the Carleton chapter of the international nonprofit MEDLIFE, serving at its first president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With her undergrad concluding, Brunelle intends to take a break from academia as she pursues industry opportunities, but sees a return to research in her future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She encourages students to look beyond their grades when measuring success in university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"9\"><\/a>&#8220;It\u2019s important to be a well-rounded person,&#8221; Despite his busy schedule, he found time to serve as the Vice President (Academic) of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencesociety.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carleton Science Student Society<\/a>, where he updated the society\u2019s scholarship evaluation processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Healey will continue to build on his expertise in health as he begins medical school at McMaster University this August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His advice to students? Make sure to get eight hours of sleep a night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Aim for eight hours of sleep and structure your life around that,&#8221; he says. &#8220;If you make that a priority and organize your day around it, a lot of other things will fall into place.
