href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapolice.ca\/en\/news\/index.aspx?newsId=ae124c86-ba71-4019-86c4-5a00fcdcbebe\">issued a warning<\/a> about the presence of the potentially deadly opioid fentanyl and the even more potent fentanyl analog carfentanil in street drugs believed to be heroin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drug samples \u2014 which turned out to contain no heroin \u2014&nbsp;were seized by officers that July 31 and Aug. 1, but police and public health officials had to wait two months for Health Canada\u2019s test results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" opioid crisis, are the target of a groundbreaking partnership between researchers at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa that is piloting the use of a portable mass spectrometer to test drug samples at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shchc.ca\/\">Sandy Hill Community Health Centre<\/a> (SHCHC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shchc.ca\/supervised-injection-site\">supervised injection site<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The 22-pound bread maker-sized machine, the first of its kind, can provide the precise \u201cchemical signature\u201d of a substance based on the mass of its constituent molecules, in less than 20 seconds.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In other words, it can rapidly reveal exactly what is in a drug from a trace sample no larger than a single drop of liquid. And if testing exposes a pattern of bad drugs circulating through the city, officials can quickly distribute a widespread alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1525381294614!6m8!1m7!1syAfPqayvW-RwVDf8QP2lUg!2m2!1d45.42927045519141!2d-75.68386101332297!3f62.17778535370938!4f5.317365256492977!5f0.7820865974627469\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is potentially the most impactful research I&#8217;ve ever been involved with,\u201d says Carleton Chemistry Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/smithlab\/people\/jeff-smith\/\">Jeff Smith<\/a>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cmsc\/\">Carleton Mass Spectrometry Centre<\/a> (CMSC), who is helming the technology part of the project in collaboration with principal investigator <a href=\"http:\/\/med.uottawa.ca\/epidemiology\/people\/leonard-lynne\">Lynne Leonard<\/a> from the University of Ottawa\u2019s School of Epidemiology and Public Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is an opportunity to bring together analytical chemistry and an extremely pertinent social science question,\u201d continues Smith, \u201cand could lead to significant insights into how to address the opioid crisis. In the latter period, more than 70 per cent of accidental apparent opioid-related deaths involved fentanyl or fentanyl analogues, compared to 55 percent in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Ontario, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/opioid-crisis\">opioid<\/a>-related deaths increased by 52 per cent from January 2017 to October 2017 compared to the same period the year before, the provincial government reports, and emergency department visits related to opioid overdoses jumped 72 per cent in 2017 over the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forty-eight people died of unintentional overdoses in Ottawa in 2015, the latest full year for which numbers are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-9382\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/saving-lives-opioid-1200w-5.jpg\" alt=\"Saving Lives from Opioid Overdose\" class=\"wp-image-9382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/saving-lives-opioid-1200w-5.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/saving-lives-opioid-1200w-5-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/saving-lives-opioid-1200w-5-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/saving-lives-opioid-1200w-5-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/saving-lives-opioid-1200w-5-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/saving-lives-opioid-1200w-5-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Prof. Jeff Smith<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These statistics paint a dire picture of a crisis that is ravaging the continent \u2014 a perfect storm resulting from over-prescription of high-dosage opioids with pharmaceutical companies downplaying the side effects, which led to high rates of addiction, followed by a regulatory crackdown on opioids that sent waves of people toward street drugs such as heroin.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis crisis,\u201d says Leonard, \u201cis the consequence of a series of inter-related events,\u201d which has led people to seek \u201cunregulated drugs of unknown content, quality and effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a unique crisis,\u201d adds Rob Boyd, director of the SHCHC\u2019s Oasis program, which provides medical and social services for people living with or concerned about HIV and\/or hepatitis C, and who encounter barriers to services because they use street drugs, have a mental illness, are homeless or are involved in the sex trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNobody else has faced a problem like this before. If you\u2019re buying heroin, assume that there\u2019s fentanyl in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very clear that something is different in Ottawa and has been going on for the last 12 months. And although Smith has not personally used other high-tech methods of drug analysis like the light-based Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FITR) being tested in Vancouver, he calls mass spectrometry the \u201cgold standard\u201d instrument for analyzing complex drug samples and believes it has the capacity to be more accurate than FITR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More work remains to be done to develop and refine the methods used to determine not only what substances but also how much of each substance are in the samples being tested, which is \u201cone of the hurdles of any new technology,\u201d says Smith, \u201cbecause there\u2019s no existing literature to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But all project participants are optimistic that it will have an immediate \u2014&nbsp;and potentially profound \u2014 impact.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe anticipate that people may adjust their behaviour based on what\u2019s in their drugs,\u201d says Boyd. \u201cPeople in the community are angry and afraid because they\u2019re seeing so many deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn this end, this will save lives,\u201d says Christine Lalonde, a member of the SHCHC\u2019s community advisory committee, which was tasked with finding out what people in Ottawa\u2019s drug user communities think about this project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have two months if there\u2019s a bad batch of drugs going around the city.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On October 4, 2017, the Ottawa Police Service issued a warning about the presence of the potentially deadly opioid fentanyl and the even more potent fentanyl analog carfentanil in street drugs believed to be heroin.
