The 10-month program combines remote learning with three in-person intensives, a two-week internship, mentorship and wraparound academic and cultural support, which are all key to student success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developed in collaboration between Carleton&#8217;s School of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Journalism and Communication<\/a> and two Indigenous institutes \u2014&nbsp;the M&#8217;Chigeeng First Nation&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kenjgewinteg.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenjgewin Teg<\/a> on Manitoulin Island and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnti.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">First Nations Technical Institute<\/a> on&nbsp;Tyendinaga&nbsp;Mohawk Territory near Belleville \u2014 the CJIIC represents the best of both worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will be able to study in their own communities, without uprooting their lives. There are significant cultural, financial and geographic barriers. Before the pandemic, everybody said that you can&#8217;t teach journalism online. But that thinking doesn&#8217;t hold water anymore. Which is why, when asked about the biggest obstacle to creating the CJIIC, McCue answers succinctly: funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Auspiciously, the <a href=\"https:\/\/mastercardfdn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mastercard Foundation<\/a> saw the CJIIC&#8217;s potential. Some might apply for jobs in mainstream media, where there&#8217;s growing demand; McCue is constantly approached by people who are looking to hire Indigenous journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graduates will also be able to use the CJIIC to enter Carleton&#8217;s journalism program with advanced standing, or to enrol in the university&#8217;s new online <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/generalstudies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bachelor of Arts General Studies Degree<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;There are tremendous opportunities for young Indigenous journalists,&#8221; says McCue.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You go into this type of work because you have a passion for storytelling and sharing news in your community, and you can make a living doing this.
