researching and writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But like many of his colleagues at Carleton University\u2019s Faculty of Public Affairs, his research is deeply relevant to society\u2019s top concerns and discussions \u2013 namely, the rise of insurgencies in Muslim and western societies.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re supposed to be smarter in the 21st century,\u201d insists Karim. \u201cWhy are we using bombs to address these insurgencies?\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Karim will be advocating for a new approach based on cross-cultural communication during FPA Research Month running from Feb. 24 through March 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a panel discussion entitled \u201cPreventing Future Insurgencies,\u201d Karim will offer insight from his research in Spain and other countries where Muslims and Christians have historically built peaceful societies together.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe are proposing a different way to look at things,\u2019\u2019 he explains. &#8220;We need to rediscover the core messages, ideas and cultures of both Muslim and western societies.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>[wide-image url=&#8221;https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/fpa-research1.jpg&#8221;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/\">School of Journalism and Communication<\/a> event is one of more than 30 that will highlight research based on some of the most pressing issues of today, ranging from privacy, government surveillance and the use of drone technology to the success of African development and diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOur mission at the Faculty of Public Affairs is to encourage discussions and debate that contribute to a civilized, informed and democratic society,\u201d explains Dean Andr\u00e9 Plourde. \u201cFPA Research Month is an opportunity for us to introduce new ideas into the public discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The month-long celebration will feature student and faculty research symposiums, panel discussions organized by the faculty&#8217;s 12 academic units and major lectures given by Toronto Star reporter Kevin Donovan, well-known economist Jim Stanford, and Internet and data specialist Kate Crawford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The public is also invited to the <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/fpa-living-books\/\">Living Books Series<\/a> on March 16, which offers individuals or groups a chance to \u201csign out\u201d a professor for a conversation based on individual interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/socialwork\/\">School of Social Work<\/a>, FPA Research Month presents an opportunity to create a blueprint for an upcoming study on poverty. \u201cMore than Getting By: Putting Daily Life at the Heart of our Struggles\u201d will be an innovative mini-conference, hosted by Social Work and the Institute of Political Economy on March 20.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cA lot of attention is paid to income inequality, but we are considering what is necessary for daily life,\u201d says Susan Braedley, a professor of Social Work and Political Economy. \u201cPeople in a low-wage economy are struggling to pay for housing, food, and care&#8211;for themselves, their children, and aging parents.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/socialwork\/research\/centre-for-studies-on-poverty-and-social-citizenship\/\">Research on Poverty and Social Citizenship<\/a> at Carleton and the Canadian Association for Work and Labour Studies, the conference is bringing in researchers from across Canada, along with graduate students, community activists, and alumni to consider these issues in facilitated roundtable discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe hope this will be the start of a community-based research project that will look at the needs of everyday life,\u201d she adds<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Carleton will also host the launch of <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/cu_event\/youth-research-evaluation-exchange-launch-school-social-work\/\">YouthREX: the Youth Research and Evaluation Exchange<\/a>, a grassroots research program funded by the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with the \u201cDaily Struggles\u201d event, the YouthREX program draws on the faculty\u2019s commitment to collaboration with community leaders. The program recruits academics to work with youth support professionals to assess their programs and share best practices.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s fabulous stuff happening in these really small centres, but the staff doesn\u2019t always have the capacity or resources to carry out research that documents their impact on youth,\u201d explains Prof. Sarah Todd, academic lead for the Ontario East knowledge mobilization hub.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Todd will join youth support workers on Feb. 25 to share experiences working together through YouthREX and to put a call out for community and academic partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But while many FPA researchers work closely within the Ottawa community, others take their skills abroad\u2014as is the case with Political Science Prof. Piotr Dutkiewicz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-1185\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/fpa-research3.jpg\" alt=\"Join us for FPA Research Month\" class=\"wp-image-1185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/fpa-research3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/fpa-research3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/fpa-research3-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/fpa-research3-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/fpa-research3-700x466.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/fpa-research3-200x133.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Political Science Prof. Piotr Dutkiewicz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>His focus is on the plight of the everyday Russian in the post-communist era.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe hear about Russia from the perspective of power politics,\u201d says Dutkiewicz, who is cross-appointed to the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS). \u201cWhat are missing are the stories of ordinary people and how the transition from communism to a market system has affected their social structure, their lifestyle and their values.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Entitled \u201cThe Evolution of Russian Society Since 1991: Actors, Attitudes and Practices,\u201d the FPA Research Excellence Award Symposium on March 17 will feature Russian experts who have studied the effect of societal change on the \u201csilent majority\u201d of Russian people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dutkiewicz says the event will offer insight not only into Russian society, but on events in the West as well.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe issue of dialogue between elites and the majority of the society is not only a Russian problem, it\u2019s a western problem. It\u2019s about the quality of our democracy, of representative power, of Parliament,\u201d explains Dutkiewicz.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Dutkiewicz\u2019s symposium is one of many FPA Research Month events intended to contribute to building better societies by enriching and enlivening the public debate on issues confronting democratic institutions around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As such, it\u2019s an ideal example of the mission of Canada\u2019s only public affairs faculty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to bring Public Affairs to the public, and to bring the public into Public Affairs,\u201d says Plourde. \u201cWe invite anyone with an interest in research that influences our society and democracy to join us for our FPA Research Month events.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Karim Karim spends much of his time out of the public eye &#8211; teaching, researching and writing.
