Just a few dozen days old, the boy struggled every time he attempted to nurse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors ran a series of tests and eventually detected a cleft in his larynx. Turns out she was fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was good to learn that this is an environment I\u2019d be comfortable in,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI left the hospital excited and energized every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Giangrande, who came to Carleton from Whitehorse specifically for the Health Sciences program, as well as to join the varsity&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goravens.ca\/teams\/nordic-ski\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nordic ski team<\/a>, is thinking about becoming either a pediatrician or OB-GYN, interested in both children\u2019s and women\u2019s health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing in Italy and being exposed to so many diverse things helped confirm that this is something I want to work toward,\u201d she says, adding that the trip also helped her prepare for a potential semester abroad at some point. \u201cIt feels like I\u2019m on the right path.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-7xl px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/health-sciences-italian-hospital-1200x680-3.jpg\" alt=\"Three health sciences students posing for a group photo inside a hospital while wearing scrubs.\" class=\"wp-image-98953\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/health-sciences-italian-hospital-1200x680-3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/health-sciences-italian-hospital-1200x680-3-512x290.jpg 512w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/health-sciences-italian-hospital-1200x680-3-1024x580.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/health-sciences-italian-hospital-1200x680-3-320x181.jpg 320w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/health-sciences-italian-hospital-1200x680-3-768x435.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"a-great-opportunity-for-health-sciences-students\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">A Great Opportunity for Health Sciences Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched in 2018, the Doctors in Italy program is affiliated with some of the best hospitals in the country in well-known cities such as Rome, Milan and Florence as well as smaller centres like Ferrara, Alessandria and Padua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students spend 40 to 80 hours in on-site clinical rotations and visit tourist attractions and soak up local culture and cuisine when they\u2019re not at their hospitals. Aspiring doctors, nurses, physical therapists and other healthcare professionals are encouraged to apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Giangrande was one of three Carleton students who participated in the program this year. She went to Trieste with friend and classmate Carlyn Brunette, while fellow health sciences major Zoe Mills spent two weeks in July at the Istituto Nazionale Tumori in Naples, the largest clinical care and cancer research centre in southern Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"580\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/health-sciences-italian-hospital-1200x680-5-1024x580.jpg\" alt=\"A woman wearing hospital scrubs poses for a photo next to a sign in front of an Italian hospital.\" class=\"wp-image-98954\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/health-sciences-italian-hospital-1200x680-5-1024x580.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/health-sciences-italian-hospital-1200x680-5-512x290.jpg 512w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/health-sciences-italian-hospital-1200x680-5-320x181.jpg 320w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/health-sciences-italian-hospital-1200x680-5-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/health-sciences-italian-hospital-1200x680-5.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Carleton University health sciences major Zoe Mills in front of the Istituto Nazionale Tumori in Naples, Italy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For Mills, an Ottawa-area native who is now in her fourth year at Carleton, with a concentration in biomedical sciences and a minor in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biology<\/a>, the experience was an opportunity to see different parts of the health-care system in action while deciding what her next steps will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mills spent a week in the thoracic surgery unit in Naples, watching operations on organs within the chest cavity, and a week in the cardiology unit, observing EKG procedures and a range of interactions between doctors and patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese types of shadowing opportunities are not common in Ottawa for undergraduates, unless you\u2019re in nursing,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt helped solidify for me, going into my final year at Carleton, that I\u2019m meant to work in health care.
