But it\u2019s also a homecoming of sorts: Vienna was Grant\u2019s very first diplomatic assignment, back in 1998, not long after she earned a master\u2019s degree from Carleton\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/npsia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Norman Paterson School of International Affairs<\/a>&nbsp;(NPSIA).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt was my first taste of diplomacy abroad and it set the tone for my career,\u201d Grant says about the seven months she spent working with the Canadian delegation to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, a horizon broadening experience for someone from a small town in southwestern Ontario.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been looking forward to getting back to Austria ever since then.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/alison-grant-1000x1000-1.jpg\" alt=\"A professional headshot of Alison Grant, Canada's new ambassador to Austria.\" class=\"wp-image-98993\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/alison-grant-1000x1000-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/alison-grant-1000x1000-1-512x512.jpg 512w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/alison-grant-1000x1000-1-320x320.jpg 320w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/alison-grant-1000x1000-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/alison-grant-1000x1000-1-600x600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2025\/10\/alison-grant-1000x1000-1-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Her Excellency Alison Grant, Ambassador of Canada to Austria<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Following that deployment, she has served at Canada\u2019s embassy to Russia in Moscow, at the United Nations in New York City and at Canada\u2019s embassy to Brazil, with increasingly senior positions at home in Ottawa in between, including the last two years as director general for international security and strategic affairs at Global Affairs Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To prepare for this next step in her professional journey, Grant went through her department\u2019s comprehensive month-long training program for outgoing ambassadors and sought guidance from Canada\u2019s last three mission heads in Austria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe talked about what it\u2019s like to run an embassy,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhat are the first type of meetings you want to hold? What are your objectives? How do you build a strong and healthy workplace culture within an embassy? With support from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ci\/research-mobility-programs-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carleton International,<\/a>&nbsp;she spent a year studying in Hungary during her master\u2019s program, an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ci\/research-mobility-programs-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opportunity Carleton continues to provide<\/a>&nbsp;for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grant also recommends reaching out to people working in this realm.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYou need to engage with policy practitioners \u2014&nbsp;to talk to people with international experience,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI spend a lot of time chatting with younger people about how to break into a field like foreign affairs. It can be a little opaque, so you have to build networks of contacts.
