David Carment<\/strong>

Carment is a series editor for Palgrave\u2019s Canada and International Affairs, editor of Canadian Foreign Policy Journal and fellow of the Canadian Global Affairs Institute. His research focuses on Canadian foreign policy, mediation and negotiation, fragile states and diaspora politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is the author, editor or co-editor of 21 books and has authored or co-authored over 90 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. His most recent books focus on diaspora cooperation, corruption in Canada, branding Canadian foreign policy and state fragility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hossein Raeesi<\/strong>
Professor, Department of Law and Legal Studies<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raeesi practiced Criminal and Human Rights law in Shiraz, Iran, for 20 years and served as a board member of the Fars Province Bar Association for two terms. He was the founder and former head of the Human Rights Committee of the Fars Province Bar Association for eight years. He is also the founder of Neday-e Edalat (The Voice of Justice) Legal Association in Shiraz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his practice as a lawyer, as pro bono counsel, he has defended political prisoners, journalists, women, LGBTQs, minorities, students and children who were sentenced to the death penalty. In this regard, he has been credited with winning several high-profile cases dealing with controversial issues like capital punishment, stoning of women, child executions, religious persecution, domestic and gender based abuse, discrimination and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the high-profile cases he has worked on, he came under the scrutiny and pressure of the Iranian government, leading to his immigration to Canada. In Canada, Raeesi continues to advocate for human rights issues, being a go-to legal expert on issues of criminal law, criminal procedure, and their effects on the criminal justice system and civil society. As a consultant on foreign legal issues, he has been working with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OUNHCHR), and Amnesty International.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stephen Saideman<\/strong>

Saideman was recently quoted in an article discussing the possibility of a civil war in the United States. His research interests focus on the causes and consequences of intervention in intra-state conflicts. His current research deals with the role of legislatures in democratic civil-military relations. He teaches courses on contemporary international security, civil-military relations, and United States foreign and defence policy.

Brian Schmidt<\/strong>
Professor, Department of Political Science at Carleton University<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schmidt is an American citizen whose research interests are international relations theory, American foreign policy, American domestic politics, U.S.-Canada relations and disciplinary history. His book The Political Discourse of Anarchy<\/em>, examines the history of International Relations from the mid-1800s to the outbreak of World War Two. He continues to pursue research on the history of the field and has published numerous articles on the historiography of International Relations. At Carleton, Schmidt teaches courses on international relations theory, the causes of war, the United Nations and American foreign policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
