\n Five Carleton Researchers Honoured by the Royal Society of Canada\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n

Five Carleton University researchers have been recognized by the Royal Society of Canada (RSC)<\/a>, one of Canada’s most prestigious scholarly honours, celebrating their outstanding contributions across the arts, humanities and sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year’s honourees include two researchers elected as Fellows of the RSC’s Academy of Arts and Humanities and three researchers named Members of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fellows of the RSC are distinguished Canadians from all branches of learning who have made remarkable contributions to the arts, humanities and sciences as well as to Canadian public life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rod Phillips<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Rod Phillips, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Academy of Arts and Humanities<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Rod Phillips<\/a> is an internationally renowned historian whose definitive works have helped reshape scholarship on family, divorce and alcohol by examining these subjects within broader contexts of social, cultural and political change. The author of 13 books translated into 10 languages, Phillips has demonstrated exceptional leadership in his field, including 30 years as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Family History <\/em>and service as president of the Society for French Historical Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ming Tiampo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Ming Tiampo, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Academy of Arts and Humanities<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Ming Tiampo<\/a> is an internationally recognized scholar and curator whose research has transformed the study of art history. A leading figure in the field’s \u201cglobal turn,\u201d Tiampo advances decolonial and transnational approaches that reframe modernism through the interconnected histories of migration, race and empire. Through her international exhibitions, publications and public projects, she has helped redefine understandings of global modernisms and influenced how scholars and cultural institutions around the world examine the relationship between art and power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists recognizes researchers within 15 years of receiving their PhD who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishment. The College is committed to excellence alongside the goals of diversity and inclusivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jennifer Bruin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Jennifer Bruin, Faculty of Science<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Jennifer Bruin’s<\/a> pioneering research examines how exposure to environmental pollutants can disrupt insulin regulation and blood sugar control, contributing to diabetes. A 2025 Dorothy Killam Fellow<\/a>, Bruin leads a unique translational toxicology research program that brings together experimental research, epidemiology and biomonitoring to address rising rates of diabetes worldwide. Her research provides policymakers with evidence to inform decisions about chemical use and strategies to prevent or limit the progression of diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laura Horak<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Laura Horak, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Laura Horak<\/a>, a 2025 Dorothy Killam Fellow, is redefining film and media studies by bringing greater attention to the contributions of marginalized communities. Her award-winning publications and digital projects, including the Transgender Media Portal and the digital film collection Cinema’s First Nasty Women<\/em>, connect overlooked histories of gender and sexuality with contemporary feminist, queer and trans movements. Her work is expanding access to film history while creating new opportunities for diverse communities to engage with and contribute to the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amy Bombay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Amy Bombay,<\/strong> Faculty of Science<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Amy Bombay<\/a>, Canada Research Chair in Multigenerational Trauma and Resilience in First Nations Peoples, conducts transformative community-engaged research focused on improving Indigenous mental health and well-being. Working in partnership with First Nations organizations, Bombay’s research has examined the cumulative and intergenerational impacts of residential schools and child welfare systems on mental health. Her work has already advanced our understanding of historical trauma and provided empirical evidence supporting the need for trauma-informed, culturally grounded services for Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
