\n Steven Davis Receives Honorary Doctorate from Carleton University\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

Carleton University today conferred a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa<\/em>, on Steven Davis in recognition of valuable contributions to promoting higher education in developing countries and his distinguished academic career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davis was honoured during Carleton\u2019s Spring Convocation, where about 3,500 students are receiving degrees over the course of four days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you are not sure what you are going to do with your life, might I suggest that you consider working side by side with people in the developing world and help them realize their dreams for their countries,\u201d said Davis. \u201cI did it for 10 years and it changed my life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davis has taught philosophy at several universities in Canada, Europe and the United States. His last academic position was in the Philosophy Department at Carleton University from 2002 to 2007. On retiring from Carleton, he founded Academics without Borders and ran it until 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davis was also the founder and director of the Centre on Values and Ethics at Carleton. He is a past president of the Canadian Philosophical Association and a former anglophone editor of its journal, Dialogue<\/em>. He has edited several collections of essays and articles in various areas of philosophy, including philosophy of language and mind and normative ethics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, Davis is professor emeritus at Simon Fraser University and Carleton. He is also adjunct professor of Philosophy at McGill University and the University of Montreal and research associate at the Jean-Nicod Institute, \u00c9cole normale sup\u00e9rieure, Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSteven Davis founded Academics Without Borders and for the past decade has recruited volunteers, marshalled resources and sought to develop programs and programming that has changed the face of university education in several developing countries,\u201d said Catherine Khordoc, associate dean, (Students) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
