{"id":47884,"date":"2018-06-19T10:25:50","date_gmt":"2018-06-19T14:25:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/?p=47884"},"modified":"2025-08-19T09:36:43","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T13:36:43","slug":"carleton-breaks-ground-on-new-home-for-sprott-school-of-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/2018\/carleton-breaks-ground-on-new-home-for-sprott-school-of-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Carleton Breaks Ground on New Home for Sprott School of Business"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"w-screen px-6 cu-section cu-section--white ml-offset-center md:px-8 lg:px-14\">\n    <div class=\"space-y-6 cu-max-w-child-5xl  md:space-y-10 cu-prose-first-last\">\n\n            <div class=\"cu-textmedia flex flex-col lg:flex-row mx-auto gap-6 md:gap-10 my-6 md:my-12 first:mt-0 max-w-5xl\">\n        <div class=\"justify-start cu-textmedia-content cu-prose-first-last\" style=\"flex: 0 0 100%;\">\n            <header class=\"font-light prose-xl cu-pageheader md:prose-2xl cu-component-updated cu-prose-first-last\">\n                                    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] pb-5 after:w-10 text-cu-black-700 not-prose\">\n                        Carleton Breaks Ground on New Home for Sprott School of Business\n                    <\/h1>\n                \n                                \n                            <\/header>\n\n                    <\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<p>Carleton University&nbsp;officially broke ground today on the <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/2014\/09\/11\/carleton-university-announces-10-million-gift-new-business-school-building\/\">Nicol Building<\/a>, the new home for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/\">Sprott School of Business<\/a>.&nbsp;The 100,000-square-foot building, named in honour of Ottawa entrepreneur and Carleton&nbsp;alumnus, the late Wesley Nicol, will provide innovative learning environments and collaborative&nbsp;community&nbsp;spaces at the heart of campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The groundbreaking ceremony highlighted the importance of the future Nicol Building and how it will benefit Sprott, its students, the university campus and the wider community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jerry Tomberlin, Carleton\u2019s acting provost and vice-president (Academic) was joined by senior Carleton administrators, the president of the Sprott Business Students\u2019 Society, a representative from the Carleton Board of Governors, representatives from Hariri Pontarini Architects and Bruce Nicol, representing the Nicol family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nicol family\u2019s generous $10-million donation in 2014&nbsp;kickstarted&nbsp; funding&nbsp;for the building,&nbsp;which will support Carleton\u2019s strong entrepreneurial activities, the Sprott student experience and enhance facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sustainable building design was produced by Hariri Pontarini Architects in Toronto. The building will be located on Campus Avenue next to the University Centre,&nbsp;the Architecture Building&nbsp;and the new Health Sciences Building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key features of the Nicol Building:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enhanced learning, networking and collaborative spaces for students, faculty and staff;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greater executive and management training offerings for business leaders;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flexible classrooms;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Event and meeting spaces, including public assembly space;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustainable design from core to skin &#8212; the project is slated to achieve 4.5 Green Globes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Space for the <a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/2013\/carleton-university-opens-campus-wide-entrepreneurship-accelerator-for-students-and-new-grads\/\">campus-wide venture accelerator<\/a> for entrepreneurs;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additional space for experiential student initiatives such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/thefund\/\">Sprott Student Investment Fund<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/case-competitions\/\">Sprott Competes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quotes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cI am so delighted to be a part of this long-awaited celebration today. &nbsp;Thanks to the generosity of Wes Nicol and his confidence in the Sprott school and the university, the new Nicol Building will be a centre for learning and discovery for generations of Carleton students and researchers, as well as a home for innovation and entrepreneurship,\u201d Jerry Tomberlin, acting provost and vice-president (Academic).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cThe Nicol Building will be a signature building on campus. As a significant architectural addition in the centre of campus, it will provide outstanding modern teaching and learning facilities for students from all faculties, showcase our focus on entrepreneurism and be a new home for the Sprott School or Business,\u2019\u2019&nbsp;&nbsp; Alastair Summerlee, Carleton interim president and vice-chancellor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe building will not only be a wonderful new addition to our campus for students, faculty and staff \u2013 it will also serve as a platform for the Sprott School of Business to make new connections to the broader Ottawa community,\u2019\u2019&nbsp; Chris Carruthers, chair of Board of Governors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHere at the Sprott School of Business, we are known for our creative, connected and caring community and the exceptional student experience we provide.
