Hornsby as the new associate vice-president (Teaching and Learning).

Hornsby will begin a five-year term on Oct. 1, 2018 and will join Carleton’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs as a professor.

In this role, Hornsby will provide strategic and operational leadership, as well as direction for instructional development and technology at Carleton. He will oversee the three departmental units that comprise Teaching and Learning Services: Carleton University Online, the Educational Development Centre and Instructional Media Services.

“I am really honoured to be joining Carleton and look forward to working with colleagues across the institution to build on the strong teaching and learning culture already in place,” says Hornsby.

“Carleton has a fantastic reputation and is well-known as a space where innovation in teaching and learning is supported and treated seriously. I am excited to work with the whole community to build on the successes and to ensure Carleton remains at the cutting edge in Canadian higher education. I am also so pleased to be joining the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and to be associated with a group of academics whose work I respect and admire.”

Hornsby is currently a faculty member and interim head of department at University College London’s Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy where he oversees the development and delivery of educational offerings at the doctoral, master’s and undergraduate levels.

Prior to this, he spent eight years as a faculty member at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, in the Department of International Relations. He also served as the Assistant Dean of Humanities (Teaching and Learning) for a five-year term and was responsible for setting strategy specific to teaching and learning.

Hornsby’s research interests include pedagogy in higher education, science in the international political economy and Canadian foreign policy in Africa. He has a strong interdisciplinary research record, having published in both the biological and social sciences. A well-respected educator, Hornsby has received teaching awards and has taken a research-based approach to teaching.

Hornsby currently sits on the boards of the Canadian Foreign Policy Journal and Active Learning in Higher Education. He has served on the Governing Council of the International Studies Association, World University Service of Canada and the Canadian Bureau for International Education. He is one of the conveners of the University and Society theme at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies.

Interim Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Jerry Tomberlin notes Hornsby is an excellent choice for Teaching and Learning at Carleton.

“On behalf of Carleton University, I look forward to welcoming David to our community,” says Tomberlin. “He is an experienced academic administrator and leader with a strong background in the scholarship of teaching and learning, which, along with his significant research portfolio and clear vision for the future, makes him an outstanding choice.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) search committee for their care and diligent work in completing a successful search process. On behalf of the search committee, I thank all who submitted comments and feedback throughout the process.

“I would also like to thank Prof. Adrian Chan for taking on the role of interim associate vice-president (Teaching and Learning) while the search process continued.”

On July 1, Chan took over from Prof. Joy Mighty, who had served in the position since 2012. While in the role, Joy raised Carleton’s teaching and learning profile internally and externally through her extensive publications, invited keynotes and presentations. She implemented a teaching framework, advocated for the adoption of high-impact practices and experiential learning, and encouraged teaching-related research.

Media Contact
Steven Reid
Media Relations Officer
Carleton University
613-520-2600, ext. 8718
613-265-6613
Steven_Reid3@Carleton.ca

Carleton Flipboard account: https://flipboard.com/@carletonstories/carleton-stories-0gbu905my
Follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/Cunewsroom
Need an expert? Go to: www.carleton.ca/newsroom/experts

Carleton University has announced the appointment of Prof. David J.
