Brand Canada in a Turbulent World.

“Trudeau’s claim that Canada’s back was not simply a declaration to global audiences of a major national rebrand,” says Nimijean. “It sought to connect Canada’s brand to that of the Liberal Party and Trudeau himself, reflective of the phenomenon of domestic brand politics. If this continues, the question will no longer be, is Canada back? but where is Canada?”

In his article, Nimijean argues that Canada needs to go beyond rhetorical declarations if it wishes to be an engaged global actor. Also in this issue, Stephen Brown looks at the connection between development assistance, Canada’s brand in the world and domestic politics. Heather Exner-Pirot explores Canada’s brand in the world through the lens of Indigenous issues. Pat James, Mark Paradis and Richard Parker highlight challenges facing Canada as the North becomes an increasingly important site geopolitically. Kai Ostwald and Julian Dierkes examine the growing importance of digital diplomacy, including social media. Evan Potter continues his examination of digital diplomacy and its connection to nation branding through an examination of the Canadian Embassy in China’s use of Weibo. Alex Marland builds on his work on political branding, by examining Trudeau’s celebrity in relation to Canada’s brand. Jocelyn Coulon describes how celebrity can overwhelm the well-intentioned ideals that informed Trudeau’s declaration that Canada was back. Daryl Copeland offers recommendations that, if undertaken, would truly mean that Canada was back.

Readers can download CFPJ articles free of charge on the Journal’s affiliate website http://iaffairscanada.com.

CFPJ is published by NPSIA at Carleton and is now in its 25th year of publication.

Click here to read the new issue.

Media Contact
Steven Reid
Media Relations Officer
Carleton University
613-520-2600, ext. 8718
613-265-6613
Steven_Reid3@Carleton.ca

Carleton Flipboard account: https://flipboard.com/@carletonstories/carleton-stories-0gbu905my
Follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/Cunewsroom
Need an expert? Go to: www.carleton.ca/newsroom/experts

Carleton University’s David Carment, Canadian Global Affairs Institute (CGAI) Fellow, professor at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA) and editor of the Canadian Foreign Policy Journal (CFPJ), and Richard Nimijean, guest editor and member of Carleton’s School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies have released the newest issue of CFPJ, Is Canada Back?
