Wednesday, Oct. 10 is World Mental Health Day and Carleton experts are available to comment on topics related to mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrea Howard<\/strong>

Howard is available to discuss topics related to her research on mental health and substance use in adolescence, the transition to adulthood and university student mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Howard\u2019s current studies include evaluating the developmental course of substance use from late childhood to the mid-20s, comparing people with and without childhood histories of ADHD; the intersection of self-control, mental health and alcohol use in undergraduate students; and well-being during the transition to university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hellemans is available to discuss topics related to student mental health, stress and resiliency, and addiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hellemans\u2019s research interest lies in the study of vulnerability to mental illness. Her past research explored the role of adverse environmental experience in susceptibility to drug addiction. Her current research examines how prenatal exposure to alcohol influences later life susceptibility to mental illness. Helleman\u2019s other main research interest is sex differences in mental illnesses; depression is twice as common among women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
