\n Ellen Waterman Named First Helmut Kallmann Chair for Music in Canada\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

Carleton University\u2019s School for Studies in Art and Culture<\/a> has announced the appointment of Ellen Waterman as the first Helmut Kallmann Chair for Music in Canada<\/a>, taking effect on January 1st, 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many years, Waterman has been a familiar and central figure on the Canadian music scene. She brings a distinguished record of research and performance practice to the new chair, touching on diverse areas such as contemporary composition, creative improvisation, acoustic ecology and music and disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe common thread in my research program is the collaborative exploration of difference and inclusion in music; the context for all my research projects is the complex social and cultural matrix that is Canada,\u201d said Waterman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building from this emphasis on inclusion and locality, a major initiative of the Kallmann Chair will be the creation of a research centre for music in Canada, one which facilitates multiple forms of scholarship, performance and community engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m thrilled to be working with the talented faculty and students at Carleton. What makes this program distinctive is that it already has a significant focus on music and culture in Canada \u2013 including Indigenous, intercultural, popular and art musics.  It has a long tradition of public engagement and this is very important to me as I plan to work collaboratively with musical communities in Ottawa and across Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
