Loder will discuss modern-day advances through the lens of general medical practice from the 1930s to today and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When: <\/strong>Monday, Feb. 4, 2019 at 7 p.m.<strong><br>\nWhere:<\/strong>Second Floor Atrium and Conference Rooms, Richcraft Hall, Carleton<br>\n<strong>Info: <\/strong>Registration <a href=\"https:\/\/events.carleton.ca\/2019-discovery-lecture-the-past-present-and-future-of-medicine-with-natasha-loder-of-the-economist\/#reg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is required<\/a>. A campus map is <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/campus\/map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">available online<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Media are invited to attend the event.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From smart watches that can diagnose illnesses, to innovative new medical cures \u2013 the future of medicine is bright. However, there are challenges ahead: the possibility of artificial intelligence making diagnoses without transparency, the threat of pathogens, and potential privacy breaches from mobile health data. &nbsp;In this lecture, Loder will examine these advances and challenges in the health field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"about-natasha-loder\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Natasha Loder<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During her more than 18 years at <em>The Economist<\/em>, Loder has covered health care, medicine, the environment, and other areas of science and technology. A foreign correspondent for three years in Chicago, Loder covered the Midwest, American education and agriculture. Prior to joining <em>The Economist<\/em>, Loder worked for the journal <em>Nature<\/em>, <em>The Times Higher Education Supplement<\/em> and <em>Research Fortnight<\/em>. She has won a number of awards for her work covering cancer, the environment and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"about-the-discovery-lecture\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Discovery Lecture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Established in 2002, the Discovery Lecture is designed to showcase and promote excellence in science journalism.
