{"id":53373,"date":"2019-01-31T11:59:41","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T16:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/?p=53373"},"modified":"2025-08-19T09:36:39","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T13:36:39","slug":"carleton-professors-receive-sshrc-support-for-a-broad-range-of-research-impacting-canadians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/2019\/carleton-professors-receive-sshrc-support-for-a-broad-range-of-research-impacting-canadians\/","title":{"rendered":"Carleton Professors Receive SSHRC Support for a Broad Range of Research Impacting Canadians"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"w-screen px-6 cu-section cu-section--white ml-offset-center md:px-8 lg:px-14\">\n    <div class=\"space-y-6 cu-max-w-child-5xl  md:space-y-10 cu-prose-first-last\">\n\n            <div class=\"cu-textmedia flex flex-col lg:flex-row mx-auto gap-6 md:gap-10 my-6 md:my-12 first:mt-0 max-w-5xl\">\n        <div class=\"justify-start cu-textmedia-content cu-prose-first-last\" style=\"flex: 0 0 100%;\">\n            <header class=\"font-light prose-xl cu-pageheader md:prose-2xl cu-component-updated cu-prose-first-last\">\n                                    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] pb-5 after:w-10 text-cu-black-700 not-prose\">\n                        Carleton Professors Receive SSHRC Support for a Broad Range of Research Impacting Canadians\n                    <\/h1>\n                \n                                \n                            <\/header>\n\n                    <\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca\/home-accueil-eng.aspx\">Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council<\/a> (<em>SSHRC<\/em>) has awarded funding to 12 Carleton University researchers in the amount of $593,000 through its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca\/funding-financement\/programs-programmes\/insight_development_grants-subventions_de_developpement_savoir-eng.aspx\">Insight Development Grant<\/a> (IDG) program, including research areas such as northern energy infrastructure, labour mobility and floodwater planning in Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, SSHRC awarded 64 scholarships to Carleton graduate students at the master\u2019s, doctoral and postdoctoral levels. 60&nbsp;graduate students received funding worth approximately three million dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCarleton emphasizes innovation and excellence in its research,\u201d said Rafik Goubran, vice-president (Research and International).<strong> \u201c<\/strong>SSHRC\u2019s support through these grants acknowledges Carleton\u2019s commitment and leadership to advancing Canada\u2019s global role in these important fields.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sppa\/people\/alexandra-mallett\/\">Alexandra Mallett<\/a>, a professor in the School of Public Policy and Administration, is examining ongoing energy system changes in the Northwest Territories, where a number of sustainable energy initiatives and alternative governance arrangements are unfolding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFour years ago, we were asked by Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR) to get a snapshot of the sustainable energy landscape in the North,\u201d said Mallett.&nbsp; \u201cThe idea is to build from this study and determine how changes are unfolding in communities. I was recently in Northwest Territories to gauge whether or not this research might be something mutually beneficial and to listen and learn from Indigenous peoples.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/npsia\/people\/meredith-lilly\/\">Meredith Lilly<\/a>, a professor in the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA), focuses on international trade. As international firms increasingly regard moving skilled labour around the world as key to their success, Lilly\u2019s project examines how policy reforms to high-skilled labour mobility programs influence Canada\u2019s attractiveness relative to the United States for high-tech businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs policy-makers continue to streamline work permits for high-skilled foreign workers, it is critical to understand the influence these programs are having on Canada\u2019s labour market,\u201d said Lilly. \u201cThis project will offer much needed evidence to inform policy development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sppa\/people\/dorries-heather\/\">Heather Dorries<\/a>, a professor in the School of Public Policy and Administration, is exploring how policies governing floodwater infrastructure and emergency management in Manitoba affect First Nations communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis project looks at the development and management of floodwater infrastructure in Manitoba over a 70-year period, and its impact on Indigenous communities,\u201d said Dorries. \u201cIn an age of climate change, cities can expect more extreme weather and an increased flood risk. This research will contribute to a discussion on how infrastructure planning and sustainability can take Indigenous peoples and knowledge into account.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About SSHRC Insight Development Grants<br>\n<\/strong>Insight Development Grants support research in its initial stages. The grants enable the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and\/or ideas.
