The community of 3M National Teaching Fellows embodies the highest ideals of teaching excellence and scholarship with a commitment to encourage and support the educational experience of every learner. Up to 10 fellowships are awarded annually.

“While this award is given to one person, it speaks volumes to the creativity and support that Carleton puts into teaching and learning,” said Todd. “There are exciting conversations about new ways to teach and support creativity in the classroom. There are always people to talk to about turning things around. This ensures the classroom doesn’t become stale for educators or students. When the classroom is exciting and fresh, lots of interesting learning happens.”

Todd is the 10th Carleton faculty member to receive the award. Previous winners include: Alan Gillmor (1995), Brian Little (1995), Donald Westwood (1997), Aviva Freedman (1997), Tim Pychyl (1998), Janna Fox (2002), Bob Burk (2006), Adrian Chan (2012) and Alan Steele (2017).

“This award means a lot to me because I think it says something about social work education specifically. We have been engaged in experiential education with community partners for decades, but we also experiment with the latest teaching technologies like AI-based professional training. We are leaders in negotiating and supporting student mental health challenges. We are not just training students to become social workers, we are challenging and encouraging them to make a difference in some of our most vulnerable communities.”

Todd is an exceptional mentor to students and junior faculty members. Students and alumni have expressed the profound and transformational impact that her dedication has had on them and their learning.

She has been honoured with numerous teaching awards. She received the Carleton University Provost’s Fellowship in Teaching for her sustained excellence in teaching, scholarship of teaching and educational leadership at the university level. In 2016, the Faculty of Public Affairs awarded her their own fellowship. Todd is also the recipient of the prestigious Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Teaching Award, which recognizes Ontario’s educators who excel in innovative teaching, course design, curriculum development, organization of teaching programs and other significant forms of leadership that are often important contributions to the instructional process.

Media Contact
Steven Reid
Media Relations Officer
Carleton University
613-520-2600, ext. 8718
613-265-6613
Steven_Reid3@Carleton.ca

Carleton Newsroom: https://newsroom.carleton.ca/
Follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/Cunewsroom
Need an expert? Go to: www.carleton.ca/newsroom/experts

Carleton University’s Sarah Todd, a professor in the School of Social Work has been selected as a recipient of a 2019 3M National Teaching Fellowship. “There is an abundance of evidence illustrating Todd’s exceptional contributions to the Canadian post-secondary teaching environment, her outstanding educational leadership across and beyond Carleton University, her exceptional gift for teaching […]

[1
88,95,112
post-53532","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-releases","tag-awards","tag-social-work","tag-systems-and-computer-engineering
["GET
