\n Carleton\u2019s Canadian Foreign Policy Journal Rates Liberal Foreign Policy Worst Since 2015\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

Carleton University\u2019s David Carment<\/a>, professor at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs<\/a> (NPSIA) and editor of the Canadian Foreign Policy Journal<\/em> (CFPJ), announces the release of the 2019 Trudeau Foreign Policy Report Card, produced in partnership with CFPJ and iaffairscanada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite repeated claims that Canada is a fully engaged player in diplomacy, development, defence and trade, the Trudeau government\u2019s foreign policy record is weak, fraught with scandal and far more conservative than voters may appreciate, according to the findings, Canada is falling behind in competitiveness because its foreign policy has focused on the dominance of an established power at the expense of building relationships with emerging markets, supporting a sustainable multilateral presence and showing real leadership on the global stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report card evaluates the government on three criteria: progress in meeting election promises, overall performance and accountability. The report examines the Trudeau record on diplomacy, defence, security, development, trade, climate change, the environment, and immigration and refugees. The report card gives the Trudeau government a C+ overall, which is by far the worst grade since evaluating of the Liberal record began in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though foreign policy rarely weighs heavily on the minds of Canadian voters during elections, this year may be different. Accusations of political interference and inappropriate pressure hover over the Liberal government\u2019s political fortunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
