While the famous Renaissance man is known for his beautiful masterpieces, King will explore Leonardo da Vinci\u2019s interest in subjects that were misshapen and fantastic \u2013 such as monsters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This lecture is part of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/leonardo2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Cinquecento: Carleton Celebrates Leonardo da Vinci<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When<\/strong>: Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019, at 7 p.m.<br>\n<strong>Where<\/strong>: Room 231, University Centre<br>\n<strong>Info<\/strong>: This event is free and open to the public. Registration is <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/leonardo2019\/cu_event\/rossking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">available online<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Media are invited to attend the event.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Da Vinci famously concerned himself with the rules of beauty, geometry and proportion. However, his writings and drawings show an interest in the ugly and the disproportionate, including grotesques, giants and monsters. This illustrated lecture will examine what this fascination tells us about da Vinci\u2019s theories of reason, imagination and the role of the artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"about-ross-king\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Ross King<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>King is the bestselling author of books on Italian, French and Canadian art and history. Among his works are <em>Brunelleschi\u2019s Dome<\/em> (2000), <em>Michelangelo and the Pope\u2019s Ceiling<\/em> (2002), as well as the Governor General\u2019s Award-winning books <em>The Judgment of Paris <\/em>(2006) and <em>Leonardo and The Last Supper<\/em> (2012). He has published two novels, a biography of Niccol\u00f2 Machiavelli and a collection of da Vinci\u2019s fables, jokes and riddles. He is the co-author with Anja Grebe of <em>Florence: The Paintings and Frescoes, 1250-1743<\/em> (2015), the most comprehensive book ever undertaken on the art of Florence. King\u2019s <em>Mad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies<\/em> (2016) was the winner of the 2017 RBC Taylor Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has lectured in many American museums, including the Smithsonian, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Frick Collection and the National Gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"about-cinquecento-carleton-celebrates-leonardo-da-vinci\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Cinquecento: Carleton Celebrates Leonardo da Vinci<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cinquecento: Carleton Celebrates Leonardo da Vinci&nbsp;<\/em>is a year-long celebration that looks at da Vinci\u2019s work with fresh eyes. In Italian, \u201cCinquecento\u201d means 500 and, for this series of events, refers to the 500 years since his passing.
