\n Four Carleton Researchers Elected as Fellows to the Royal Society of Canada\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

Carleton University\u2019s Norman Hillmer<\/a>, Robert Letcher<\/a>, Tim Cook<\/a> and Rianne Mahon<\/a> have been elected as Fellows to the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) <\/a>in recognition of the high level of excellence demonstrated during their careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is my pleasure to congratulate these outstanding Carleton researchers on being selected as Royal Society of Canada Fellows,\u201d said Rafik Goubran, vice-president (Research and International). \u201cThese intellectual leaders have demonstrated excellence throughout their careers and are engaged in research that directly contributes to Canadian society.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fellowship of the RSC comprises more than 2,000 Canadian scholars, artists and scientists, peer-elected as the best in their field. These are distinguished people from all branches of learning who have made remarkable contributions in the arts, humanities and sciences, as well as in Canadian public life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hillmer has been elected as a RSC Fellow by his peers in the Humanities Division of the Academy of Arts and Humanities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am very conscious of the honour and responsibility that comes with membership in the RSC,\u201d said Hillmer, Chancellor\u2019s professor in the Department of History<\/a> and the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs<\/a>. \u201cSince I arrived in Ottawa, I have been supported by Blair Neatby, David Farr, Carter Elwood and a generous Carleton scholarly community that wanted the best for me and my research. I am grateful to all those who nominated and elected me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hillmer is currently writing Canadian Peacekeeping: A Contradictory History<\/em>, the first full-scale account of Canada\u2019s peacekeeping role from the Middle East to Mali. The book will be published by the University of British Columbia Press. Last year, Hillmer published his 31st book, a critical examination of Justin Trudeau\u2019s foreign policy, edited with Carleton\u2019s Philippe Lagass\u00e9<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Letcher has been elected as a RSC Fellow by the Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences Division of the Academy of Science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy research is interdisciplinary in nature and successful due to outstanding long-term collaborations with individuals with expertise covering a range of areas,\u201d said Letcher, adjunct professor in the Department of Chemistry<\/a> and Department of Biology<\/a> and located in the National Wildlife Research Centre on the Carleton campus. \u201cI am fortunate to be working with talented partners and I am honoured and pleased that my contributions have been recognized by the RSC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Letcher studies the impact of chemical substances on the environment and living systems. His research investigates the environmental, forensic and analytical chemistry of established and emerging organic contaminants in wildlife and fish and their ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cook has been elected as a RSC Fellow by his peers in the Humanities Division of the Academy of Arts and Humanities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cook, professor in the Department of History<\/a>, has explored Canada and the world wars through his scholarship and exhibitions. His many award-winning books focus on the social and cultural history of Canadians and the contested means by which we remember and make meaning of conflict. His work as an historian at the Canadian War Museum and his media appearances have widely disseminated history to the Canadian public. He is a member of the Order of Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mahon has been elected as a RSC Fellow by her peers in the Academy of Social Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mahon, professor emerita in the School of Public Policy and Administration<\/a>, is an internationally recognized expert on comparative social policy and gendered global governance whose contributions cover a range of important debates and cross several disciplines. She has made major contributions to reformulating theories of the state and pioneered research on the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and other international organizations. Through cross-national comparative analysis, she has advanced the understanding of interaction of local, national and international scales of politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
