In this talk, Geddes will explore how Leonardo da Vinci thought about his experiments \u2013 especially those concerning water \u2013 and his efforts to expose an aspect of nature that would otherwise be difficult to study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This lecture is part of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/leonardo2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Cinquecento: Carleton Celebrates Leonardo da Vinci<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When<\/strong>: Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, at 7 p.m.<br>\n<strong>Where<\/strong>: Room 372, Residence Commons, Carleton<br>\n<strong>Info<\/strong>: Registration <a href=\"https:\/\/events.carleton.ca\/cinquecento-a-lecture-by-leslie-geddes\/#reg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is available<\/a>. A campus map&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/campus\/map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can be found online<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Media are invited to attend the event.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of his experiments, da Vinci boiled water, placed obstacles in watercourses and documented transient natural phenomena. To better understand river currents, he employed tactics such as tossing sticks into streams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His accounts of these experiments reveal how da Vinci addressed challenges pertaining to the limits of vision, as well as how one renders what one sees and knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Geddes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geddes&nbsp;specializes in Italian Renaissance, Baroque art and architecture. Her research examines how early modern artists studied and depicted the natural landscape \u2013 specifically the use of drawing in the production of knowledge. Her first book project, <em>Watermarks: Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance Mastery of Nature<\/em>, analyzes the subject of water in art, in conjunction with the practical undertakings of hydraulic engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Cinquecento: Carleton Celebrates Leonardo da Vinci<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cinquecento: Carleton Celebrates Leonardo da Vinci&nbsp;<\/em>is a year-long celebration that looks at da Vinci\u2019s work with fresh eyes. In Italian, \u201cCinquecento\u201d means 500 and, for this series of events, refers to the 500 years since his passing.
