\n Carleton\u2019s Lenore Fahrig to Deliver Lecture on Biodiversity and Conservation in Small Spaces\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

Carleton University\u2019s Lenore Fahrig<\/a>, Chancellor\u2019s Professor in the Department of Biology<\/a>, will present the lecture Small Spaces Pack a Big Punch for Biodiversity<\/em><\/a> as part of the Royal Society of Canada\u2019s (RSC) Romanowski Lecture series. In this talk, Fahrig will bring attention to the importance of protecting numerous small habitat areas in order to support biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fahrig, a Fellow with the RSC, will deliver the lecture as the recipient of the 2018 Miroslaw Romanowski Medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As habitat loss has been identified as the main cause of current species extinctions, environmental policies have traditionally focused on the preservation of large, contiguous tracts of habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Fahrig\u2019s research has shown that the cumulative biodiversity value of small sections of habitat is at least as great as the value of one or a few large tracts that cover the same amount of land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Improving biodiversity conservation will depend on a wholesale shift in environmental policies to recognize and protect small habitat areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Lenore Fahrig<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fahrig, an internationally renowned researcher in conservation ecology, has helped to define the field of landscape ecology. Her trailblazing work has created paradigm shifts in research on habitat connectivity and fragmentation, road ecology and sustainable agriculture. Fahrig has one of the highest citation rates in ecology, including the world’s most-cited paper on habitat fragmentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the Miroslaw Romanowski Medal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established in 1994, the medal is awarded annually for environmental research. The award recognizes contributions to the resolution of scientific aspects of environmental problems or important improvements to the quality of an ecosystem brought about by scientific means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
