\n Carleton to Host Symposium on the Gothic Legacy of Mary Shelley\u2019s Frankenstein\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

Carleton University will host the international symposium The Gothic, the Abject and the Supernatural: 200 Years of Mary Shelley\u2019s Frankenstein<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference will feature keynote addresses from British scholars Marie Mulvey-Roberts on Conceiving Monstrosities: Frankenstein, Sexuality and Place<\/em>, and Kevin Donnelly on Monstrous Encounters: The Aesthetic Psychology of Screen Frankensteins<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Penned more than two centuries ago, the story of Frankenstein and the genre of gothic horror continues to endure and fascinate. The classic, frightening tale inspires the cultural imagination in literature, visual art, music, film, drama, women\u2019s and gender studies, cultural studies and related disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this symposium, a collaborative examination of themes from Shelley\u2019s novel will bring these disciplines together \u2013 fostering discussion and debate on the extraordinary story. Wide-ranging topics will be discussed, including the novel\u2019s influence in music, film, visual arts and architecture; gothic imagination and conceptions; as well as Frankenstein, disability and neuro-diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In advance of the main program, conference attendees will have the opportunity to attend the Ottawa premiere performance of Andrew Ager\u2019s opera Frankenstein<\/em> at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre on Halloween. Carleton architectural historian Peter Coffman will deliver a public lecture titled God, Ghosts and Empire: The Life, Death and Afterlives of Gothic Architecture<\/em> prior to the opera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
