Abbott will discuss da Vinci\u2019s celibacy and explore aspects of the Renaissance world he lived in and shaped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This lecture is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/leonardo2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cinquecento: Carleton Celebrates Leonardo da Vinci<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When<\/strong>: Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019 at 7 p.m.<br>\n<strong>Where<\/strong>: Room 102, Azrieli Theatre, Carleton<br>\n<strong>Info<\/strong>: A campus map is <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/campus\/map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">available online<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Media are invited to attend the event<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 500 years later, da Vinci\u2019s sexual activities, or lack thereof, remain a fascinating topic of discussion. In this talk, Abbott will trace this stout-hearted, generous and ambitious genius through some of his life\u2019s key events and relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"about-elizabeth-abbott\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Elizabeth Abbott<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Abbott is a writer and historian with a special interest in the treatment and lives of animals, the environment and social justice, and women\u2019s issues. She is a Senior Research Associate at Trinity College, University of Toronto, where, from 1991 to 2004, she was Dean of Women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abbott is the author of several books, including the bestselling relationship trilogy <em>A History of Celibacy<\/em>, <em>A History of Mistresses<\/em> and <em>A History of Marriage<\/em>, as well as <em>Sugar: A Bittersweet History<\/em>, <em>Haiti: A Shattered Nation<\/em>, and most recently, <em>Dogs and Underdogs: Finding Happiness at Both Ends of the Leash<\/em>. She was the editor-in-chief of <em>Chronicle of Canada<\/em>, the illustrated history. She has recently finished the novel <em>Shaking the Lion\u2019s Paw: The Trials of Nelson Hackett<\/em> about the escaped slave who fled to Canada only to be legally surrendered back to slavery in Arkansas in an egregious miscarriage of justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"about-cinquecento-carleton-celebrates-leonardo-da-vinci\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Cinquecento: Carleton Celebrates Leonardo da Vinci<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cinquecento: Carleton Celebrates Leonardo da Vinci is a year-long celebration that looks at da Vinci\u2019s work with fresh eyes. In Italian, \u201cCinquecento\u201d means 500 and, for this series of events, refers to the 500 years since his passing. During Cinquecento, Carleton\u2019s faculties come together to explore da Vinci\u2019s interdisciplinary innovations.
