\n Carleton to Host Screening of Film Focused on Women on the Autism Spectrum\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

Carleton\u2019s Communication and Media Studies<\/a> program in the School of Journalism and Communication<\/a> will host a screening of the film Seeing the Unseen<\/em>, an Icelandic documentary about women on the autism spectrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Media are invited to attend the event.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Often going undiagnosed with autism, women and girls can struggle for years with little or no support. Seeing the Unseen<\/em> follows several women who receive assessments after facing a lifetime of stigma and shame related to their neurological differences, but who are able to find understanding with women who have similar experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seeing the Unseen<\/em> is presented in Icelandic with English subtitles. The film\u2019s content includes topics of sexual violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A panel discussion on the how women on the autism spectrum can thrive will follow the screening. Expert panelists include Gu\u00f0laug Svala Steinunnar Kristj\u00e1nsd\u00f3ttir, an autistic self-advocate featured in the film, physiotherapist and city councillor; Corina Lynn Becker, vice-president of the Autistic Women and Nonbinary Network; and Dori Zener, social worker and therapist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The panel will be moderated by Christine Jenkins, co-author of Spectrum Women<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
